The columnist has missed the point of the UPARROWS solution, I think. They "make you jump" because pressing the up arrow in a game often causes the character to leap upwards.
@Elizabeth Ross I feel like the person whose tattoo your saw, as well as the author of the clue for 9D, has missed the point of "The Treachery of Images". As the title suggests, the point of the caption is that the image of a pipe is not itself a pipe. It would be a lie to say "this is a pipe" — it's not a pipe, it's a mere representation of a pipe. This isn't a paradox. The tattoo you saw was a paradox, though. The arm is an arm, not a mere representation of an arm. So labelling it "this is not an arm" isn't a clever reference to the difference between signifier and signified, like Magritte's painting, but simply transferring his caption to a place where it is no longer appropriate.
6D appears to be misclued. It suggests a plural answer ("with one of these") but ALLACCESSPASS is singular.
Does 27A, [NSFW], not need an initialism indicator, like "for short"?
I went through this very smoothly until I got to UVEAS crossing BUSS. Is this crosswordese that I'm supposed to have picked up? Should FYI be clued with an initialism indicator?
