“What might prompt you to flip the bird” was the clue of the week for me! Did not know BURPEE was a person. Don’t like him now. I am a Korean but “100 jeon” is an unfair clue. I am a Korean and I don’t think jeon was used in the last 50 years. It is equivalent to 1/1000 cent. The word may exist but the money does not. My two jeons. Lastly a shout out to Sienna Saints where I spent a year in my twenties!
I liked the idea of the puzzle but it would have been better if: 1. The highlights worked in both directions. Can’t expect us to remember which word had missing letters. 2. We did not have the third trick. Especially cumbersome because of 1 3. Crossings were more balanced. Some just didn’t make much sense
Oh my. As soon as I figured out the theme, I knew I had no chance as I lack the histories. Still I enjoyed finding out interesting headlines along the way, but… I found some words either too obscure and/or awkward for me, some I didn’t understand even after the answer. So went the Sunday struggle.
One of those puzzles that started slow but things smoothly clicked into places once I got going. Thank you for the enjoyable puzzle! 13A I kept seeing ONION DIP. I did not fill it in because I knew it was the wrong answer but I could not unsee it until late! I need some snack now
First time I saw the clue, I confidently put in HEADACHE as a reward for solving Saturday puzzle. I managed to complete it, but I cannot claim NERDCRED since I got some help with names along the way. Did end up with a slight HEADACHE!
How clever! I fly a lot and I got a good chuckle when I figured out what’s going on. Perfect for today
RIP Chuck Mangione Part of my youth as Feel So Good was the signal music for my favorite FM radio show in my high school days. Brings me back whenever I hear it
@R.J. Smith It’s OK. Nobody’s perfect 😉 (Trekkie here)
Today’s puzzle had too heavy with trivia that I am jot familiar with. But the clue for MACBETH made me remember “Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow” by Gabrielle Zevin was the best book I read recently, especially for someone who lived the 90’s as a young person. It’s the kind of book that you want to tell everyone about. Sorry for the tangent. Back to your puzzle, please.
With Spring finally around the corner, nice imagery formed by tan, sundress, donut shop, orange soda and of course a glass of appletini for TGIF! I appreciated this puzzle.
Very cool effects! I haven’t heard of Ta-___ Boom-de-ay but managed to make an educated guess with a certain duck. The lowest number of iron I can hit reasonably well is five. If you can hit ONE IRON, you ain’t playing with me!
It was hard, I admit it. I don’t mind obscure (to me) names so much as this is a chance to learn something new and different. I hope that they don’t cross each other but I always appreciate the effort that creators put in. I do like some puzzles than the others for their cleverness and chuckles. Today’s puzzle was rather dry.
I wondered where the author’s head was in as I filled in SEXTED for “Showed off on an instrument” (I guess I missed “on”). Alas, it was mine that had to be out of the gutter. Kept looking for the theme that wasn’t there. A grind, but some TIL moments were nice.
My personal best for Saturday. Saturday that feels like Wednesday would normally be a terrible day but not so today! I am ENAMORED with today’s puzzle. Clean, yet fun.
Tangent of the day: Anyone interested in TIMEPIECES and horology should try the book I am reading now, “Hands Of Time: A Watchmaker’s History” by Rebecca Struthers. It is a wonderful book.
First time I had fun with C ! Deserved it too, since I was stumped with some answers.
It’s just another manic Monday I wish it was Sunday
I got thrown off by putting EGOISTS for prima ballerinas. My sincere apologies to all ballerinas out there.
I have aged 100 years while solving the puzzle. Wasn’t prepared for that on a lazy Sunday. I always misspells to amatueure. What an amateur. It seems chest exercises are overrated.
@Matt You are technically correct but this misspelling may have become standard now, perhaps due to “Mr. Roboto” by The Styx
@Joey I don’t think he is any more obscure than some of other sports names we get in the puzzle. I am just waiting SOTO to appear and haunt me.
@Dave I was solving while I was watching. Stopped watching and switched gears to solving
@momonjava I read that one too! The movie was enjoyable as well.
That was fun! Challenging but fair. Not too many extreme trivia and proper names were under control. Enjoyed answers falling into places at a steady pace
