16A - "chop" and "shank" are particular cuts not associated with a specific animal. "steak" isn't a specific cut, so IMO "lamb steak" is not an "alternative". In fact, a "chop" could *be* a "lamb steak".
Oh, for God's sake, please keep gimmicky !#*ery like this to the one day a week that's allotted to it and especially never on a Sunday.
Disappointed to start my morning with this instead of the usual enjoyable Sunday puzzle. Whatever this is, it's not a crossword. Okay, maybe *half* of it is a crossword. The other half is something I'm (apparently along with a lot of people) not at all interested in. I thought things like this were relegated to Thursdays. Please keep them there.
Hate the gimmicky stuff - especially on Sunday. Keep it to Thursday or add them to the list of other puzzles.
The clue for 62-Across should have ellipsis, like ".1111..., .2222..., .3333...." because a feature of the answer is that they repeat forever.
I will again complain about the gimmicky stuff ruining the Sunday puzzle, the last place it should be.
Please please please keep the gimmicky stuff to Thursday and let us have a regular (if larger) one on Sundays?
I'll repeat my regular plea to leave the gimmicky stuff to Thursdays and not ruin a(nother) Sunday.
Uh, I wasn't looking or anything but the "take a peek" link goes to an old puzzle from 2018
I will make my usual plea to keep the gimmicky stuff to its allotted Thursdays.
I will, as usual, beg for NYT to keep these gimmicky puzzles to their day and definitely out of Sundays.
Fun puzzle - but a Lemon Drop is no Martini!
Has anyone in this discussion ever read/heard/said the word "toolroom"?
A keg does not dispense beer. It stores it - but to dispense from it requires a *tap*.
The gimmicky stuff kills the Sunday puzzle for me. Please please please keep it to Gimmicky Thursday?
The clue in Gameplay for 30A should be 33A
@TZ So agree with you. I wish they'd just keep them on the day set aside for gimmicky puzzles but I'm extra-disappointed when they do this to my Sunday mornings.
I don't like the gimmicky stuff and am just happy it's (usually) relegated to Thursdays, when I (usually) don't gripe about it. But this was so off-the-path and irritating that I'm making an exception. I wish NYT would have a separate puzzle for these miniature-golf versions of crosswords.
What's the Autocheck that Ms Amlen mentions not to judge her about? I don't see it in "Settings". (asking for a friend)
@MarkN Multiplication by itself is a function, so the clue isn't the same as the definition but is an example of one.
@srulee The burrito wasn't either. But the clue didn't say they are - it says "with a hint to the initials of 17- 25- 48- and 56-across"
"Rebus ... makes it Thursday-worthy" ... then run it on Thursday!
That clue for 28-down is a stretch. I kept ignoring it though it would fit because that's just not what it means.
Ok, I give up complaining when trick puzzles appear on any day other than Thursday. But please let us at least have Sundays' puzzles be gimmick-free? It's really a letdown.
@Phil Thanks, I see the option now on the Android app but not on the desktop browser.
@Linda Jo Well, yeah, that's why it's clled a "Thursday Trick". How does my preference to keep them there make me a "commoner"?
@Barry Ancona It could be #6550 and it wouldn't make them any less annoying. And they could be all kept on Gimmick Thursday and take 14% for all I care. I do not complain on those days, no matter how irritating the gimmick - but if the Times has the room to introduce an additional size puzzle, certainly they can have one devoted to puzzles with rebuses, QR codes, and scratch-and-sniff clues. But *please, at the very least, keep the flagship Sunday puzzle free of the goofiness.
