"But Mr. Ford definitely blamed it for costing him the presidential nomination in 1976." Ford won the nomination, but lost the general election.
@Grant It's the "IDOL" franchise, not American IDOL that's most watched. More than 50 versions aired in more than 150 countries.
@JB Well now you've been educated. Puzzle aim accomplished. P.S. Everyone should read Jhumpa Lahiri, one of the finest living writers.
@Helena Black Magic.
Perhaps true Quilting Bees are not competitive, but Quilting classes often are.
Being in sync with Mr. Locke leads to new best Monday time.
@Mean Old Lady just because you don't know someone, doesn't make them unknown. Emil Nolde is a well-known, if controversial, German Expressionist with works at the NY Met, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, MOMA NY, as well as many German galleries. The Magnificent Ambersons is listed in numerous Greatest 100 films of all time and and it was added to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress in 1991. Less kvetching; more expanding your horizons.
Whizzed through the top, then came to a stop.
But for me, epic Russian literature beats “Achy Breaky Heart” seven days a week, 52 weeks per year.
Adam -- glad you got something from the Rochester no show eclipse.
@KStandiford As always, one's "incredibly obscure and difficult" is another's easiest clue in the puzzle.
@Mean Old Lady Voltaire
@Greta Neat as a pin.
@Aethon I don't think age has anything to do with it. The jinx ritual has been around for at least 50 years. Psychological study from 1973: https://psycnet.apa.org/record/1974-25013-001.
SRSLY scad? No.
@ad absurdum Perhaps they're being courteous, wishly to view the paintings' detail up close, but not wishing to block the view of everyone else. Kudos to them.
@Grant Declaration signed and promulgated on July 4. Decision was made on July 2. Mr. Adams was there and on the committee that was given the assignment of drafting the document.
@lucky13 Carol Lawrence played Maria on Broadway, never Natalie Wood (movie). Tom Aldredge, Barbara Andres, and Frances Sternhagen played in On Golden Pond on Broadway
@Ross Snyder a vague French thing? Are you talking about the English word PIN, as in "neat as a pin"?
I think I must be missing something but I find OCEANTIDE as the answer for "Destroyer of a castle, perhaps" as an inapt clue. It would be a very inept castle constructor whose castle would be destroyed by a tide, as opposed to a storm, tsunami, hurricane . . . On the other hand the clued worked in that I got the fill.
@MJFROMBUFFALO You could use numbers.
@Vaery Geologically you are correct. The Finger Lakes are North-South lakes formed when the Ice Age cap was retreating and left moraines damming the pre-exisiting river valleys. They are deep and long. Oneida is shallow remnant of a large lake that covered much of Central New York when the Ice cap dammed the St. Lawrence River. My father, the Earth Science teacher would certainly not give credit for Oneida as a Finger Lake.
@Charles matzok? Flasksale? Try a H.
@Jeff Talk rhymes with chalk.
Totally frustrating. Tried all the suggested ways of dealing with the T's and nothing: no music, no "close" but somethings off, nothing. Did both check and reveal and nothing. Other than that a fun puzzle.
@Tom Bantle further agonizing found an error: got the music, but all the clues with a T in them remained in bolder type. Sigh.
@Mean Old Lady Read constructors' note.
@Barry Ancona What is their bailiwick?

@kjc We were alive 40 years ago and read the NYT. Unlike many this puzzle was in my vibe; done in well less than my average Tuesday.
