At first the answer to 49D had a slightly salacious sound to me. Nuns wear habits, but I was not aware that monks' robes were also called habits so it seemed a little racy until I googled it! Also, "GIRLIES?" GAL PALS made sense for the clue. I don't know a soul (male or female) who refer to their women friends as "girlies."
@D that's a rather unpleasant comment. It was a challenging puzzle for me, but I took joy knowing that a grandfather and his grandson created this together. Lighten up, please.
@The X-Phile I found this puzzle to be a bit more difficult than most Monday puzzles, so I agree with the many folks who commented similarly. What I find irksome is when someone says something like "Easiest crossword puzzle ever! I finished it in less that 10 minutes!" In other words, "I'm smarter than most of you." Your comment falls in the second category.
I never comment. Well, rarely on crosswords. Came to say this was my fastest time, ever. Not a good, nor bad thing, as I enjoy spending time on the puzzles each morning, so finishing quickly doesn't always bring joy. Back to the grind and all that. However, even before solving so quickly, I knew I'd want to comment on finding it hard to imagine how an Egyptian cobra could be considered a tricky clue. Seems as if the answer to it appears, in one way or another, nearly weekly.
@Grant so does that mean you're pro fascism?
@Pax Ahimsa Gethen I thought the clue should have read "Spanish for girl friend"
@Bob T. thanks so much for that blast of 70s nostalgia! The set, the font and Linda Lavin's ensemble! It was the Mike Douglas Show, btw. My Mom never watched the soaps, but she was a big fan of both Merv and Mike.
I found the scribbled in boxes/answers distracting (my eyesight isn't what it used to be) so my answer to 49A could have been "SandeMilton"
