That sounds really scary, Garrett. EMDR works wonders. Thank you for sharing your story. My crossword memory is waking up to find my mom having coffee and doing the daily crossword. She died 2 months ago, and most everything I know about crosswords came from her. She was so good at them, and we also loved playing Scrabble and Boggle together.
@Manda Adams And as a PASTOR, I loved 34A!
Great puzzle, Owen! I’m also a lover of queer theory. And I lived in Waltham when same sex marriage was legalized in Mass in 2004 (before you were born) and was thrilled to witness some of my friends get married!
@TESmith I had TEASER, so same problem!
This was fun, though I almost gave up because I couldn’t figure out my error. I had ENACT change instead of EXACT. Which also works on the cross if using the archaic ENCITE. Whew!
Ok I love this one, because May 15 is my birthday!
@Hope Levav Love that! What great memories you’ve been building with your son. And congrats on your yearlong streak! That’s impressive!
@Ben Blackwell It’s “aro ace,” short for aromantic and asexual.
Very clever and fun. I loved the misdirects and the well-thought-out, comprehensive theme.
@Naud Do you have SNARF or SCARF (my error) in 1A?
I was a nanny in Cambridge, MA in the early aughts. I kept hearing Trot trot to Boston Trot trot to LYNN Trot trot to Marblehead We all fall innnnn!
@Wark I agree, sometimes it can be pretty nasty around here. I think it’s gotten worse sense the election. I suspect the stress so many of us feel is showing up in our interactions.
TSOTSI is a really wonderful film. Still one of my favorites. Thanks for an invitation from a South African friend, I got to see a pre-screening, followed by a Q&A with the director, in Boston. I was really impressed with the director’s perspective and expertise. So fun to have this memory come up 20 years later!
@Phil C. I got it because certain mansplainers on social media love to call anything and everything a NO TRUE SCOTSMAN fallacy.
@Bruce Ha! Not surprising. I scroll the headlines in my News app and only click on articles that interest me. On social media, I don’t follow accounts that only post about politics. I learned during Trump’s first term that it’s not good for me to be in a constant state of reactivity and anxiety. Here’s to making it through the next 4 years.
@G Man I agree on ñ. It’s an entirely different letter.
@Moops These are somewhat frequent crossword answers, so you might want to add them to your memory bank!
@Richard I was checking my grid for errors when I saw your comment, and I had done the same thing. Thanks!
Beautiful theme. Once it clicked, I solved faster, though there were some clues I needed Google’s help with. Overall a unique and satisfying puzzle!
A tricky one but a lot of fun! I’ve heard both BOLD- and BALD- faced lie. Maybe it’s regional? I’ve lived in the Northeast and in Texas.
@Mae It’s listed as a variant: <a href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/bocce" target="_blank">https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/bocce</a>
@Francis I’ve heard DIS since the 90s, if not earlier.
@Manda Adams Thanks *to an invitation
Some niche, tricky clues, overall very clever and satisfying to finish!
