I consider myself a connoisseur and I was mostly confused by the theme. As is often the case when a joke has to be explained, I was less than impressed.

Hi NYT - Thanks for reminding me of all the reasons why I detest the Thursday crossword. I like puzzles, not games. This was a game.

@Allan - The fill was probably constructed months ago, but the cluing could have been edited anytime up to the time of publishing. There are myriad ways 68D could have been clued that didn't normalize or otherwise remind crossworders of f-Elon.

@Bill - A game is trying to figure out the right combination letters, slashes, etc. that the Crossword website will accept as a finished crossword. A puzzle is correctly figuring out the theme/rebus, which I had done early in the solve. One is infuriating and frustrating and a task akin to a monkey trying to fit a square peg in a round hole, while the other is fun.
