Excellent puzzle, but I have to note that “Vegas hot spot” is an unfortunate clue for the MGM Hotel. In 1980, the former MGM Grand was the site of a terrible fire, the worst disaster in Nevada history and the third worst hotel fire in US history.
Kookaburra crossing Munn and Anke?! On a Tuesday? For me, this is the worst kind of clue. Just random letters on a page.
It seemed to me that rave didn’t need to solve to crave. “Needs no introduction” is a rave. The missing first letter was therefore “not needed” to solve the clue. I thought this was very clever.
Overall, great puzzle. Thank you. But I don’t get why dreadlocks are “protective” and I’ve never heard “bout” and “spree” being used as synonyms. Because Ogallala was for me just “random letters on a page”, I had to scroll through the alphabet.
I enjoyed today’s theme, but baleen crossing BPA? I’ve never heard of either. I had to run the alphabet. . . on a Tuesday, no less. Good thing I only needed to get to “b”.
@SP I have the greatest respect for the constructors and editors. I could never do what they do. My humble suggestion is that they could have replaced “derma” with “DARPA”. It would have been an easy fix to avoid an awkward clue.
@Chris I agree on pura vida. I’ve been studying Spanish for years and have never seen it. Googling it, it’s usage seems to be limited to Costa Rica. Foreign words and phrases are fair game, but not words that many native speakers wouldn’t know.
@Laura Stratton I loved the grid, enjoyed the clueing (except darner and glop) and like a good Saturday, the upper left corner looked impenetrable when I started. But at the end of the day I finished in one-third of my average Saturday time and (as you predicted) quicker than my average Wednesday.
@Jaclyn Herrin. Of course you’re right, Jaclyn. Not sure what all the resistance is about. Especially when your comments are so reasonably and patiently expressed. The replies remind me of a well-meaning colleague in the 1980’s who couldn’t understand why he was corrected when he referred to someone as Oriental instead of Asian. My objection is different: imagine the reaction if the answer to a clue listing two completely unrelated people was Christian, Jewish or Muslim: Outrage? Confusion? Why is membership in the Church of Latter Day Saints still seen as something exotic?
