I’m a relatively infrequent puzzle solver, so this was my first experience where a rebus wasn’t hinted at in some way (whether a clue with the words “this puzzle’s theme” in it, or marks, or colors), and I found it a bit frustrating, but once I finished I have to say I liked it. And I learned something (and not just what a jeremiad is)—a rebus can appear any time, without warning.
@Susan E Thank you! I Googled “loi” and simply found a lot of definitions for letter of intent, and “loi pascal” yielded some unclear websites in French and it didn’t dawn on me to run a translator. I was about to chalk it up to “weird thing crossword puzzle solvers know that I haven’t learned yet” until I stumbled on this post, now it makes perfect sense. Another reason I should invest in a few months of French lessons.
@Sam Lyons I wrote METI; its president has written op-eds for NYT at least twice (as recently as last November: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/11/15/opinion/alien-extraterrestrial-arecibo-seti.html). That said, I understand that SETI is far better known and clearly there is some public confusion on this issue.
