“So you make these puzzles … who solves them?” Thousands do today, congrats Kevin!
Really enjoy your choice of photos each day for the columns. It really adds so much to have adjacent images for the topic.
I heart Animal Crossing, so it was cool when the “animals crossed” the clue. At our house years ago, we were all playing so much that sometimes we would describe projects or activities and others needed to ask “in Animal Crossing or real life?” Happy Wednesday everyone
Congrats Hannah on a lovely debut. Yeah, SHIP is new to me. Next time maybe more particle physics?
What a great photo today for the column! Also, I hope Lewis is safe in (or possibly out) of Asheville. I look forward to his “favorite clues of the week” wrap-ups.
The maths teacher gives this one a “ 5”. (I grade on a 5-point scale.)
@Lewis I had to read “windy flight” twice to get it. ROB was awesome. I praised my daughter for getting it!
Great column today about construction and a lovely note from Trent to us all. Along those lines, my daughter and I solve these together online. Me in California and she (now) in Latvia. We allow ourselves to get help from asking anyone in the room with us. It builds a great vibe wherever we are!
In teacher school they told us to not use red ink because it has taken on negative connotations over the years. So I always have about a dozen red pens at my house that I never use.
That was pretty dope! Thankful that I was not trying this puzzle alone. SHOUTOUT to RADIANS, the best measure of angles
What a clever theme! My favorite clue was one I never actually solved: the George Bushes.
Very enjoyable puzzle today! Luckily had my daughter, recently in Central Asia, next to me for the TAJIK clue. No emus needed.
Always feel smarter after a Thursday, well, not always. I have only praise for the theme. I’m saving all my scorn for LAV.
Congrats on The Orca! I will have to go back and try that one after enjoying this one so much. I like to do that from “time to time”.
I really enjoyed the theme, even though not being aware of the film made it a slower solve. I am so glad that Garrett shared his story and a bit of his recovery. The double success of his puzzle and his recovery has really cheered me up today
Tried to do this one with the Downs only….just couldn’t finish it. But it made for some fun discovery of the theme clues, which we did get. Didn’t feel as satisfying an experience since we were not looking at half the constructor’s work—that seemed rude?
What a lovely theme, so clever! One of my favorites and it felt so natural rather than forced. Kudos to all!
Loved that ETC = ETCETERA clue. Well done, I had never seen that before. Every Prince reference cheers me up, thanks
What a great Thursday after a week away from the grids. I, too, love a punny clue, even though I hate puns IRL. I enjoy how they ask my mind to be more flexible!
@Ernest Though I don’t always enjoy the “name the speaker” quote clues, the new ROSA PARKS clue did add more flavor to the puzzle. My ROSA PARKS clue when I include her in my NYTimes submission will be an OutKast one, sorry for another American trivia reference, Ernest
Thanks, Jack for a lovely Monday….but, as a 40-year math teacher, chalk sucks—even Hagoromo. And my college still has chalkboards in every classroom (save the one I teach in).
Why do so many of the comments YABBER about “emus”?
Thanks for your story, Deb. It has rung true for many of us here in Napa
Am I the only one who is “Q is for Queen”?
Nice dedication to the newsroom, Phillip
Very clever idea and construction
@Britt Depending upon the keyboard you are using, you should either see the “Rebus” as an option in the lower right or need to hit the “more” button on the lower left to bring it up. Once you see the button, hit it and rebus away.
Only knew the PEORIA reference from Charles Mingus’ “The Clown”—anyone else? If not, the title track is a must listen!
Very enjoyable theme! The family GROKS it now.
Really nice theme. Clever way of binding together so many well-known sayings. Lost some time and wondered about my age when I stood by DAZZ as the “Whip it” band, when my wife clearly started singing “whip it good”….only to sheepishly realize that “Let it Whip” was the Dazz Band’s big hit, not “Whip It”. Lost some credibility there. “Wanna see you with it Sure could treat you right Give me just a minute Of your time tonight We both are here to have good fun So let it whip” Still a classic!
Way to get Ned Kelly in there, mate
@Nicola Man, I didn’t even know AGORA…
@Lewis I knew you would pick LION! That was a goodie, as was PIT CREW
Fun puzzle today, but that quintuple stack from 2012 has some pretty dodgy words crossing it. Glad I wasn’t in the game that day!
@Norman That’s two mentions of Napa this month. And Grape Nuts is my favorite cereal. It’s all working out for me. Excellent theme today. I had the promising LONGBOARDSHORTS in there for too long—I guess I didn’t like The Odessey as much as some?
@DZ Impressive, and in 31 minutes,too!
@Kristopher I still don’t get it!?
@Lewis I loved DOGEARED, too! I even read it to my partner. Shout out to WARRENG, whose “Regulate” never once sounded presidential.
@Raven Pfister Yeah, I thought I was wrong with WIRYSIMILIE the entire time since when I removed all the “I”s it didn’t work. I did see a WRYSMILE World…and maybe that should have pushed me from “remove all the Is” to “remove one I from each word”.
@Keith Law It’s like you were in the room with us! Those were the stumpers for us, too
@Andrzej GAS is dated, oh my.....true. Damn, you are gonna miss us Boomers when we are gone. Sounds like things will be far less LIT then.
@MFSTEVE Same here, but I left the math team for the far cooler chess club
@Dave ST This is why I am in the comments today. We took 4 1/2 hours on Sunday’s and didn’t get it. TGIM
