@Dan Wholeheartedly agree especially since the clue says “something *written* five times…”. A word is written. A line is drawn. Everything else was a breeze.
I am working my way through the crossword archive and it’s astonishing how many puzzles include references to leering and ogling and characterize these as “longing looks.” The number of references to Robt E Lee, CSA and nooses is mind numbing. The answer to an outdated hairdo is invariably “Afro.” This appears regularly. These puzzles were published in 1995 and 1996 not the 1950’s. Many of the references to hags, bats and crones are very tiresome. These puzzles were edited! I’m sincerely sorry to bring this up because I love the puzzle package. I love the NYT. But some of this is just shameful.
