@jlemen It’s always projection with right-wingers: your entire movement is fueled by extreme media bias (e.g. Fox “News”, “X”, and so on). The Times has notably bent way over backwards — so much so to the point of disservice to the public — when it comes to Donald Trump.
CHECKMATING CHICK MAGNET will have me chuckling all day.
I wound up trying to say these phrases in Sean Connery’s voice: SHKIP TO MY LUGE.
I got a NIKON camera I love to take a photograph So Mama don’t take my Kodachrome away …
“Like a mom or dad’s patience” is a great clue.
@Allen As an attorney, I thought this was an excellent theme.
Serious question: Does the American Orthopaedic Society pay the Times to have ULNA appear in so many crosswords?
This Friday puzzle was as tough as a Saturday for me.
I always check the comments for the controversy du JOUR. I doubt it’ll ever get sillier than meep meep versus BEEP BEEP. (Though I’m a meep-meep-truther.)
Yesterday and today were not good for my averages, but good for warming up my brain!
This crossword had a very silly theme, so needless to say I enjoyed it.
Is this where I come to register a complaint about the REBUS in today’s crossword?
I slowed myself down by deciding early on that a flying fox is a type of SQUIRREL. Oh well.
@HeathieJ I’ve had to buy every one of Yoko Ono’s and Brian Eno’s albums, thanks to the NYTXW.
Great to see an entire puzzle built thematically around our frequent guest, OREO. Tom and Dan, do EMU next!
On a Thursday puzzle, I neither clench my jaw nor approach it like any other day. Instead I take a special delight!
Love a good rebus, and this was a great one!
@Lewis Great, now I’ve got that in my head. “Rumspringa, the rite with the Amish touch.”
Outstanding Friday, thank you Adrianne for sharing your work! The six spanners are all excellent.
@Tom Bandy I rather enjoy the whining and griping, particularly when someone (most often Barry) refutes a nit pick.
For me, THAT’LL DO is the cherry on top that makes this puzzle.
I’ll be saying “Shred the GNAR” all day in my best Sean Penn from Fast Times at Ridgemont High voice.
I wanted “It’ll find a way” to be LIFE, per Jeff Goldblum.
I let out a big groan when I figured out the theme, which is a tribute to the constructor!
I’m not quibbling with the clue, because it was indeed a fad at one time, but I just wanted to note that TETRIS is still played actively. There are even tournaments!
If this is the new Friday standard, I’m in big trouble tomorrow.
Definitely easier for hoops fans like me, but them’s the breaks of the game. Getting all-time great Hakeem OLAJUWON (who I remember well) into the grid was a nice cherry on top.
I always use EXTRA OLD BAY on popcorn. But then, I grew up in Maryland.
Sufferin’ succotash! I knew I shoulda taken that left turn at Albuquerque. What a maroon. Well, so long suckers.
We have an ONO but no EMU. Can it really be said that this is the alternating-consonant-vowel-crossword to end all alternating-consonant-vowel-crosswords without an EMU?
If you have absolutely no alibi or defense to a RAT squealing on you, does that make you STARK NARKED?
I’d like to have seen Wordplay give a shout out to jazz great ART TATUM. Here’s a YouTube that shows the nearly blind pianist’s absolute virtuosity: https://youtu.be/q0QD558TWSQ?si=12BCt0S4rgPRAegC
For all of you who thought of SHOUT phrases, I want you to know that I will be childishly giggling for the rest of the day.
Well, I must have gotten much better at this over the past couple of years! Yay me.
437 comments already? Without having read any, I predict there will be some complaints. But I thought this was great Thursday fun.
@Suzzzanne Clue it as “Difficult in the extreme”
Did this one about 10 minutes faster than yesterday’s, but both were very enjoyable.
@Alex Definitely a NATICK but the easiest possible one once you have PERET_I.
Congratulations, Katherine! “All, for nothing, e.g” is an excellent clue. And you used EKED and NAYS like an old pro!
I loved “It may bring out the kid in you” and “Modern art?” Great debut!
Emmy Noether was not only a giant in mathematics but also in physics!
I could care less about difficulty for a particular day, especially Thursdays. It all evens out in the wash. In other words, why complain about an occasional outlier? Oh, and great puzzle Kevin! I too loved 28D and 29D.
@ad absurdum Just to be clear, Nixon didn’t create the EPA out of any concern for the environment. He did it due to overwhelming public pressure. You can read about it in the Bill Ruckleshaus interview here: https://www.epa.gov/archive/epa/aboutepa/william-d-ruckelshaus-oral-history-interview.html In fact, Nixon tried to water down the original Clean Air Act, but Muskie won out. And Nixon vetoed the original Clean Water Act.
As a Christmas gift to Sam and everybody else afflicted by the song-that-shall-not-be-named, I remind you all of the cure for an earworm: singing “The Girl from Ipanema.”
Apropos of the clue for 3D, Deb, now that you’re retired, I hope you get to visit Paris in the the spring. Congratulations!
Nice tribute to the famous cryptic crossword constructor, STEPHEN SONDHEIM.
And, by association, a third excellent TV series, Columbo. This week I managed to beat my average every day! Hopefully that’s a sign of improvement on my part.
