An obvious rebus is still a rebus is still a bad crossword puzzle.
I'm going to submit a crossword where the entire collected works of Dostoyevsky need to be entered into a single box. Maybe then I'll finally be enough.
I'm going to invent a crossword abomination that requires the insertion of morse code, roman numerals, hand drawn maps, and the musical notation of songs from ancient Indigenous Cultures of the Americas and South East Asia. The Rebus has opened the gate to pointless self indulgent complexity. I'm taking suggestions for this new puzzles name.
I was prepared to hate the "hyphenated non-clue" until I had my own 2 across 15 down. There was grumbling followed by acceptance. Better than ANY POSSIBLE rebus at the very least.
You are overstating things. The grid was not brilliant.
