Took a while to get going! I always read the Wordplay after my first pass on Saturday — not ashamed. Took about an hour of simultaneously solving and *ahem* “learning” on this one before things began to come into clear enough view to really get rolling. Saturdays are always good for a humbling experience! Enjoyed this one nonetheless.
Perfectly Tuesday puzzle, the best kind! I will always remember Sarah Sinclair’s stuffed crust pizza grid. I loved it so much, I remember forwarding it to my grandfather to solve: a veteran crossword solver of +60 years, and the person who first got me started on them. Just realized I’ve never asked his opinion on rebuses… I’ll have to follow up and see if he enjoyed it as much as I did.
Did I just have to use the Wordplay column clues to solve a Monday??
I understand the complaints, but I thought the puzzle was pretty clever overall and definitely unique. It might have been easier to do on paper, where the image could be drawn while solving, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
Relatively quick Thursday puzzle — but fun nonetheless. Always enjoy a rebus surprise! (Except for the kind in that one puzzle that shall-not-be-named)
This was a fun, clever Thursday! I very much enjoyed, though I must say, I was shocked when JODHPURS actually went through (after checking the cross-entries about 15 times)
Rebus puzzle — my favorite kind of Christmas present! It being above the circle threw me off until I got to the revealer in the bottom right corner. Loved it, thanks for the fun solve!
Was this a hard Monday or did I just have too much to drink during the game? Enjoyed it, either way!
@Hard truth sayer I have to agree. I struggled quite a bit with this one! But I think back to how much help I would need with a Monday puzzle, when they are now my “race” puzzles. Saturdays are always difficult, but there are generally one of two outcomes I enjoy. Those long entries that finally click, and the rabbit holes I go down when I have to look up an entry (currently deep into Jawaharlal NEHRU’s background). As our lovely columnists often say, “it’s your puzzle; solve it how you want” I would add “it’s your puzzle; find the enjoyment from it that you want.”
Surprise rebus twist at the end! What a fun and clever Wednesday puzzle with which to end the day. Thank you, Evan and Jeffrey!
Refreshing after yesterday’s saga.
I’m the type of gal that likes a theme — especially if it has a juicy rebus element. But this was a fun Friday, even if it was themeless! It took a couple circles around but steadily came together in patches. Got stuck for a few minutes in the NW corner, but once I finally realized 24A was not in fact “DATED” it was on to victory
Delightful puzzle from start to finish! I tend to lose my streaks on Sundays because — well — they can be a bit tedious to completely fill. This was very entertaining, with many clever entries and fun clues. Then the bonus puzzle at the end! And my favorite part… no stretching or crossing obscure proper nouns to make the theme work. Great job, can’t wait for y’all to submit your next crossword!
Update: puzzle is much easier/more solvable when you can see the colored lines.
@Steven M. Not to be a STICKler, but if the word is used in place of the proper noun — e.g. “Oh hello, Mother” — it is indeed technically a proper noun, in that case
I enjoyed this Sunday puzzle! Because I prefer themes, I tend to half-dread Friday and Saturdays —- until I start filling in enough to get those fun/clever long entries. Minimal obscure references on a Sunday puzzle are always preferred so as not to turn it into a chore. I thought it was balanced well and made for a fun themeless solve, and I was surprised to see so many complaints in the comments
This was so much fun! Thank you, Dan, for some well-needed relief from the chaos of trying to pack/moving this week!
@Becca I was only brought to the comment section by this last Sunday’s crossword drama, so I had no idea rebuses were so controversial! I LOVE them and look forward to Thursdays specifically because of the chance of a rebus surprise.
It took me quite a while to break through initially, as well. Not sure if that was me or this (so far) 10-day cold/flu hybrid plaguing my entire house. Once it got going, it kept rolling along though. Fun solve! Thank you for the distraction! Now where are my tissues and Mucinex…
I haven't solved this puzzle yet, but I just opened the puzzle on my laptop and saw the colored lines in the grid! I started solving on my phone earlier and the colored lines were definitely NOT there -- just went back to check if it was because I was in "Dark Mode," but even after switching it off, I still can't see any colors on the app version of grid. Anyone else have this happening?
@Betsy Update: puzzle is much easier/more solvable when you can see the colors
@Jerry As an Atlanta transplant, I appreciate the sentiment. And don’t worry, I pretend I still live in GA during football season…
