I started an origami company but it folded.
I thought the longest one-syllable word, and indeed the longest word, was SMILES because there is a MILE between the S's.

@MRR The plural of ox the animal is oxen, but the clue was for oafs, and evidently the plural for an ox that is an oaf can be oxes.

@Michael I had HAA and WAIST but now seeing the answer is WRIST realize that it is where I put my wristWATCH, so the space on which I put my watch is my wrist.
@Oikofuge PREK is Pre-K for before Kindergarten. Sometimes the lack of spaces can be misleading (as when PERSE is meant to be PER SE, or an old TV show is not THEDA, but THE D.A.)
@ImmodestyBlaise Halftime is football or basketball. NHL hockey has 3 periods so only has "between periods".
@HeathieJ No 54D is cat, but 50A is car, because Jaguar, like Lexus or Rolls Royce is a make of car (named after the animal)

@Michael Weiland I think because it's a Monday puzzle, a cross-reference with two unknowns is a later-in-the-week construct. Being able to specify Chicago keeps the puzzle at a Monday level.
