Great puzzle. The puns reminded me of something Michael Scott would say in the Diwali episode of The Office. Also, Mindy Kaling and Jenna Fischer can certainly be called alumni OR alumnae of The Office. The deciding factor? If the entry is 6 letters or 7.

What is with this fill and the clueing? 8D, 11D, and 12D are all multiple words, and even then I can't get a straightforward clue for 9D? Also, for 10D, the Cat in the Hat famously wears a red hat. Sam I Am is known for other verdant-ham-related things. The whole Northeast was just bad. To me, this is the fourth subpar NYT crossword in a row.
