As an Aussie, for some reason I always get Jack Nicklaus and Jack Newton (also was a golfer) mixed up. The latter had a bad accident in the 80’s when he walked into an airplane blade and lost an arm and an eye. So when I realised the answer was ONE EYED JACKS I was like….😳 wow NYT is getting a bit harsh with the clues!

I enjoy trying the puzzle each day but - genuine question - is it only puzzles from Americans that are accepted? I understand that this is based in the US but it is an international publication. The sheer volume of clues that can only be answered if you’ve lived in America is depressing for me. I feel like I’ll never be able to complete one on my own, as there is always questions about college sports, sayings, words, tv stations, celebrations, occasions, celebrities, brands that are only known of in the US. And I’ve lived in two continents, travelled the world and spent a lot of time in the States.

@Petrol I think our woes can be summed up in the answer to 19D - in most other countries the answer would be WORLDMAP 😂

Yikes, this puzzle hurt my brain. There was just no way to keep track of everything easily on a mobile device. Way too confusing and made attempting to solve too messy and difficult. A puzzle I think that was created for the enjoyment of the constructor….not the solvers.

@A B Church I thought that at first too, until realising the double letters are only on the parts that spell out a finger name (digit), hence the double digit. Really clever.

Enjoyed this. Never heard of Nerts so there’s a new word for me. However, as an Aussie living in the U.K. for the past 22 years, I have never, ever heard a Brit say the word AGGRO. It is however a VERY Aussie word.

Great puzzle. Really enjoyed it but I think Sirs counterpart should have been Dame. 😊

Loved this puzzle and the picture clues! Although I’m a bit slow this morning - think I need more caffeine as I was thinking what the heck is a DOORDIE?! 😂

@Janet I’m not sure if that’s how it originally came about (although it’s not pronounced the way it is in illegitimate). But it is definitely used over here to refer to someone as an arse, idiot, moron, etc. it’s pronounced with a hard g.

@Doug yes the title gave it to me too. This is the first one I think I’ve done where I figured out the trick! I loved this and so happy to have been able to complete it.

@Striker yeah this threw me too. I’ve always called it a Liger.

@Shelley yeah that one got me too. Initially put it in and then took it out thinking, no that’s for a baby not a toddler. Then realised it was right later on. Really enjoyed this puzzle though.

@Keaton yes! You’re being generous. It’s downright wrong. No one calls a bath a lav.

@Asher same here. Just so many words I didn’t know or hadn’t heard of. Plus with differences in sayings, according to my crossword the symbol of life is an ANKY and NERM was the well known husband of Claudia Octavia. 😂

Really enjoyed this. Thursdays are usually hard for me, but I was able to complete this with minimal look ups. Not sure if I’m getting better or this was an easy Thursday! 😂 Anyone else have EMAIL instead of ETAIL?

@Roberta The end of the road points to “Rodeo Drive” which is the name of a road. The last or end letter of which is E. Nothing phonetical about it.

Yay! Finally a constructor who knows what a losing line in tic-tac-toe is! When I saw that clue…I was preparing to be annoyed again. 😂

Can someone please explain WHEW? What is that - maybe an American word but I’ve never heard or seen it before. Surely PHEW is the correct word here. Other than that, this was great.

So as an Aussie living in the U.K., sometimes I struggle with the Americanisms but can someone please explain to me 40A what’s a PEE CUE? I’ve just got into these crosswords, and really enjoying them, although I get stumped a lot! Some things just don’t translate easily across the pond.

Well this puzzle was defo way over my head or not on my wavelength. Doesn’t mean it was bad, just too hard for me. But I love learning new things so that’s always a positive that comes out of these puzzles. TIL that there is another CARAT and it’s spelt KARAT! Got stuck there for a bit!

This was clever but I just feel that the basics of a crossword puzzle means it should read down as well as across. I got INAPPPURCHASE quickly….but didn’t fill it in because then TEPID didn’t make sense. Maybe just me, but it felt wrong.

That was fun. Enjoyed it. But, I have issue with OXO being a losing line in Tic Tac Toe. It’s a draw…no-one can win or therefore lose with that line. Surely a losing line for you is when your opponent gets OOO or XXX. Then you lose the game. Might be my ADHD brain!
