Like you, I thought initially that "END OF THE ROAD" must mean "D"; and when I got the -XIT, realized it had to be "E." But I never made the "RODEO DRIVE" connection. I rationalized that, since the clue began "END OF THE," the "E" was the end of "THE."

“Curled up with a book”? Or “Holed up with a book”? Aren’t those holes depicted on 27A?
