Great puzzle. It took me longer than usual because I had a couple stubs flat wrong that took awhile to erase. I do take umbrage with 31 down though...the answer is NOT the holder but includes the contents!! Thanks for the great puzzle.
Enjoyable puzzle for me. I'm not expert enough to judge the TAO clue, and "take" -> HOLD I'm fine with. But I still don't get it - and there is a lot of noise when googling - but how does INS relate to "Entrees"?
@Stephanie Yes, I also had a bit of trouble. I went ahead and just filled in the answer with the cross's answer and it completed the puzzle, but I didn't like it. Then I read in the article that oft-forgotten definition of "bias" which means at an angle. I know this word from gardening, and with this understanding it makes sense to NOT have the rebus , since the circled letters create that angle. Clever.
Great puzzle. So many good clues, with possibly the best being "synthetic oil producer?" One throwaway being the "number" clue, which should have been a question mark since "number" isn't a word. But they get away with it since that clue is itself the only question mark for the puzzle. Really walked the line.
