Isn't the Grand Puba the head of the Loyal Order of Water Buffalo, the lodge of Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble?
It's so interesting to read which clues stumped solvers! (Usually referring to rap and video games.) I remember when I started doing NYT puzzles in the early 1970s and the clues that stopped me cold had to do with opera and boxing. I guess boxing isn't as popular as it once was - except for the occasional reference to Laila Ali. Opera has mostly dropped off the radar. Has anyone looked at the waxing and waning of certain topics over the years?
@Hugh I pulled HEGIRAS from the memory of a Joni Mitchell album, despite the different spelling.
Clever puns. I especially like 'grift registry' - I've been invited to a few of those parties!
Sometimes I finish the puzzle and get surprised by the "Congratulations!" because I never had a clue about the theme. This was one of those times.
This was a fun puzzle but all the up and down left me with an earworm -- I haven't thought of the song is years and years! Those magnificent men in their flying machines, they go up, Tiddley up, up. They go down, Tiddley down, down
The dates were the keys here! An excellent theme and reminds me of Bogart's famous line from Deadline - USA: "It's the press, baby! The press! And there's nothing you can do about it. Nothing!"
I was confident in my answers and just left blank spaces, assuming there was going to be some tricky rebus I hadn't figured out yet. It took me a long time to add the dashes and I was surprised when the screen came up with "Congratulations!"
@Linda Jo Drew Barrymore's movie Ever After turns things around and it's the Prince in distress and the damsel who does the rescuing!
Another puzzle where I was expecting a tricky rebus solution. In the end, I trusted my judgement and entered the incomplete words. I was really surprised when the "Congratulations" popped up!! I never did make the 'bottomless' connection until I read about it.
