Fun puzzle, but the setting of "Fiddler on the Roof" (53A) is Ukraine, not Russia. Anatevka is modeled on Boyarka, a town near Sholom Aleichem's birthplace in central Ukraine. See this, from NPR's "All Things Considered" back in February 2022 at the start of the war: https://www.npr.org/2022/02/25/1083155890/if-russias-invasion-of-ukraine-feels-familiar-look-to-broadway-in-the-60s And yes, I know that in 1905 when the musical takes place, Ukraine was ruled by "Imperial Russia." The clue still seems extremely unfortunate IMHO.
Fun and challenging; just the right level of difficulty for a Saturday. Loved it!
Lots of fun. The classical theme was certainly a nice change from the usual parade of pop culture pseudo-celebrities. More like this, please.
"70's Ford", "Get a running mate", and "Catch" for RUB were brilliant, and it was fun to learn that the "National dish of Ukraine" is BORSCHT. But BOOM ROASTED? Seriously??
The clue for 12D was *brilliant* misdirection. THAT SAID, I will simply note that if you enjoyed this, I'm glad you did. De gustibus non est disputandum.
TRANSIT right next to TRAINSET was pretty clever.
This was brilliant. More from Ms. Hoody, please!
Ms. Lovinger, thanks for the link to the article on the Singing Revolution! Anyone who would like to listen to some beautiful Estonian choral singing can do so here: https://singingrevolution.com/about/music/ (To hear all the songs, be sure to scroll all the way down.)
Well done Ms. Hoody! More like this, please.
@Kelly H Apparently Portland (OR) was founded by two New Englanders, one from Portland (ME) and the other from Boston, and they flipped a coin to pick the name. https://www.oregonencyclopedia.org/articles/portland_penny/
Question on 42A: A DOOR might be open OR shut. Or it might be openED or shut. But can it really be "open AND shut"? Other than that, a clever , fun Monday puzzle. Hope we see more from Mr. Locke!
@Steve L Bingo. "This animal is very bad; when you attack it, it defends itself." -- old French song
As always with Ms. Hoody's puzzles, loved it!
