Not being from the US I count it fair to look up brand names and other such things once I've made a guess as to what they might be; that's reasonable, right? Yeah, I know I only need to justify it to myself but hey, a little validation never hurts!
First time commenting, but this one was a roller coaster! The first 28 minutes involved a lot of sighing and I was very concerned I would be hitting the net for US state capitals. Then suddenly the trick clicked and the rest was a lot of fun. For me, half the enjoyment is deleting the wrong answers and putting in the correct ones so I love when the clues are vague enough to permit that. (my least favourite is "only one possible correct answer and it's a sports person I've never heard of) So yeah, all in all an enjoyable Sunday solve, thanks !
@Nancy J. I was really hoping the name was going to be Moe, but sadly none of the crosses fit...
Just when I had accepted that the answer to that clue was "UNESCO", they did the switcheroo on me...
As a late GenX and techy this was entirely up my alley! Fun and breezy solve, although I dithered a bit about the direction the storming was happening.

@Petrol thanks for this! Having never heard of the shoes, the campus or the dish, I had a hesitant 'D' and then was totally blocked.

Only hold up today was that I can never remember if she's Marion or Marian, and the hospital name meant nothing to me either way. The theme was great, I love when it helps with solving rather than being a clever "aha" get the fact!
@Michael Whistler totally agree; I feel like it's pretty much divorced from the meaning of dry in anything other than a metaphorical sense.
@Xword Junkie Craves, as in needs. A word for "needs" that's missing its first letter. That gives "needs", with no introduction (or start).
