I am thankful for NYT games. All of them.
Canniest, for instance!?! Come on…brilliant! Fun Sunday solve. Went perfectly with my morning coffee.
I guess we had to really power through the grid since there was no theme or gimmick. And was full of esoteric clues/solves. I’m not mad about it, but there’s always next Sunday.
Nice and challenging Saturday puzzle!! I am always baffled when people come here and complain about the amount of trivia etc that comes with a Saturday puzzle. The same complaints from a week ago about how the Saturday puzzle was way too easy and not challenging enough. Saturdays are for learning new things and words. Saturdays are for chewing and thinking and getting stumped. Saturdays are for… I guess in am going to give in and look this one up. Saturdays are for Today I learned… This puzzle had a beautiful symmetry in design.
I agree Sam. Friday is my favorite puzzle day and the one I am most excited for each week and the saddest when I am done because I have to wait another week. This was a smooth solve today.
Some of the best clue writing I’ve seen in a while. Very witty and a fun Friday solve.
Agree. The double theme and multiple meta references made for a fun and enjoyable solve.
Very smart crossword. Nice job Kiran!
Kevin… such witty clues! Bravo!
One of my first Halloween costumes as a kid was Q*BERT! Love seeing it here!
Love it. As a California native this was super fun!
This is a confidence booster Friday puzzle. Feels great going into the weekend knowing you could do this fast and efficiently. Then comes tomorrow and we will all be complaining about how esoteric the clues and solves are. LOL.
Fun puzzle. My only nitpick (minor) is that three of the four scissor clues were “CONCE” before cutting once. Felt like the fourth one should have also been the same or if not all four should have been different. I kept thinking: What in the world is a stancon ceremony?!?
Blake, impressive job with getting the entire alphabet in there at least twice. The layering of all the Q/J/X words was no easy feat. Kudos.
Agree. And “gamy” vs “gamey” not thrilled by that. Want familiar with mouth harp either.
All those years watching MTV certainly helped the bro-clues :) Great Wednesday (almost Thursday-ish) puzzle!
Yesterday I discovered the monthly bonus puzzle. How did I not know about this and why can we not comment on those puzzles and the wonderful themes they provide? OMG. Am I the only one to have recently found this!!?!
@Jerry I love the themes. There is no comments section on the puzzle page. No review, no solving tips. It’s just the puzzle and that’s it.
@Cat Lady Margaret oooh… CATION COMMITTEE!
I forgot to thank Kameron for the well designed and challenging grid. I know it’s not easy.
Love this Josh! Layers of word puzzles. So smart!
@Grumpy type of gas you get at the gas station. Regular vs premium or super premium etc.
@Matt You sign up for a newsletter and NYT emails you a weekly version of the Friday puzzle with “easier” clues to help you. https://www.nytimes.com/newsletters/easy-mode
David, the Kelly video was so fun to watch. Her reaction was priceless. Great puzzle, too!
With today’s brisk solve, I simply did like 55A and Took the W.
This was a great solid Saturday puzzle and judging by a lot of the comments I think many would agree. Monday esoteric terms. Very smart clues. And how can one not appreciate the Pokemon reference!! Excellent puzzle, Katie!
@MC must be a new NYT phrase. I just kept scratching my head. Hurrum?
7D was easy and made for a fun and quick solve. 1D, 16A and 48A deviate from the “how to build a crossword” guidance about repeating answers. 46D was a great answer.
@Sara Agree! That locked it in for me and then the Aha! moment.
@The X-Phile loved the Tonkatsu / Wreckitralph cross. Great job Adrianne!!
Has anyone solved the Bonus clues from Trenton?!?
@Cat Lady Margaret “figures” should be 9 letters, no?
@Ms. Billie M. Spaight I’m still trying to figure out the third one. The other ones (thanks to @Cat Lady Margaret were: CATION COMMITTEE AMPLE LEAVES
@Heidi agree with everything you’ve said. With more and more people it becomes very difficult to keep everyone happy. I personally LOVE Friday puzzles. A few years ago when I started doing the NYT crosswords I would skip Friday and Saturday. I would go back and do the archives and also skip Friday and Saturday. Eventually I gave in and went back to do all the Friday and Saturdays that I had skipped. The amount of learning that I got just by doing this was crazy. Now I wish I could just do Friday puzzles. :)
@Matt I put “nurses” first as this is the correct answer. But changed it after seeing the cross clues. Totally agree.
@Jeff unlike Sam, I did not laugh so quickly. “Part of speech” sounds awkward. Those words are really parts of a speech or a part of a speech. I would never describe “Have a dream” as part of speech. Some may disagree.
