@Lesley The code, in this case, is Morse. It uses "dit"s (short / dots) and "dah"s (long / dashes). "T" is just a single dah / long / dash. :)
@Louie W Karel Čapek is a well-known Czech—he introduced the word "robot" to our lexicon over 100 years ago.
@Alex Why is it weird? That's her name—Desi Lydic. (You can take up any cultural-appropriation issues with her parents.) I, for one, think it's pretty fun twist on what is otherwise a straightforward clue—this person is not Desi Arnaz, nor is of she of Desi (cultural) descent.
@Min well, I'm grateful for your comment, since that one was blocking my progress in the SW corner! Thank you. :)
@Murhatroid The "exe" file extension means "executable". Not seeing a problem there?
@Strudel Dad hello from Carling Avenue across from the Experimental Farm!
@Mean Old Lady "Between the puzzle's crossings (Unknown actor/Laotian currency)" Ethan Hawke is far from being an unknown actor. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethan_Hawke
@Pax Ahimsa Gethen oui ! « je vais te nourrir » is correct in all the ways it should be. :) Well done! If you wanted to use the same tense (futur simple) in your substitution as in the original, you would say, « je te nourrirai ».
@NotMyRealName this is an interrobang: ‽
@Lorien THANK YOU! As a Canadian, I was surprised to see that this made it through since it's so very easily checked. (I guess I should consider myself lucky that "Inuit" was the answer and not the older term... sheesh.)
@Clem Since yours is the first comment I've seen on the subject, would you be so kind as to explain "[Galley command]"? I can't make heads or tails of it. Thanks!
@Tom There's a hundred and four days of summer vacation... (Hopefully emus won't come along just to end this reply.)
@Heidi "I don't understand why anyone would think that entering the word LINE would work, as the extra letters would mess up the down entries." I don't understand why you don't understand it, as "clever" rebuses on Thursdays *often* create nonsense words in one direction. I don't give a fig about my "streak" (I have none and consider it a win if I find time every day to *open* the app), and I recognize it's a game... But it is heckin' frustrating to play a game that applies its own rules inconsistently. That's not a puzzle, straight-up irritating, and it sucks the fun out of the experience.
@Keaton I thought the answer would be "kazi" (a spelling of "khazi") since "WC" didn't fit, and "loo" is no longer exclusive to the UK. Maybe "tubs", if the clue was referring to the vessel in which one bathes. But I didn't consider LAV. D'oh!
@Samantha Elder millennial here: I concur!
@Tom this may shock you, but children have access to dictionaries... did ictionaries containing "adult themed stuff". Yes, even the "rather twisted adult stuff" you mentioned. (Which surely can't be "PORNO", because that clue is benign as all get out ) Should we be clutching our pearls over the contents of the dictionary and its use in schools, too?
