As an experiment (and to improve my going to bed time), I waited for the morning to start this, and it was fun and relatively quick. Quick is not bad. Of course, the first comment I read was someone complaining that it was too easy. I politely state that the “too easy” commenters might want to keep their opinions to themselves and let the rest of us enjoy the puzzle.
Yellow 5 and red 40 are food colorings, which unfortunately fits, and threw me off, otherwise a very nice puzzle.
Yeah but it seemed that all those spaces next to the lines needed rebuses, and it turns out that what they really required was to treat all the colors as implied, which is NOT what I got from “inside the lines” — I think you get a little too cute some days. Otherwise a fun puzzle.
@Crabby I didn’t like this either, and I mean no disrespect to puzzle-makers, but it’s just a game, dislike it and move on.
Fun, awesome in fact, and also, since I am many years past high school, I don’t feel so bad about not getting the pop words.
Fun and humor are good things. I looked at comments to see if there were going to be any whines about this, and SURVEY SAYS NO. Thank you for this puzzle.
For me, a great example of doing better after a good night’s sleep! And when I woke, it still seemed hard and then, one by one….
Fun puzzle, I only looked at the comments to see if there were a lot of “too easy” complaints as there usually are, and I was pleased that there were only a few. The long answers fell into place, which is as it should be.
“Line around the Equator” was the last thing that I got, possibly because I was there on vacation about 2 months ago, and I kept trying to think of some local name in Ecuador that I had forgotten.
I got the revealer, I finished the puzzle (including all the square roots without figuring out that’s what they were) and only got the “aha” moment much later, when I woke up too early (now, that is) and couldn’t get back to sleep right away - maybe now I can!
@Elsie Borden I find that my time (this one happened to be relatively fast for me) has little or nothing to do with enjoyment. Unless you have memorized several dictionaries and encyclopedias, sometimes they’re just words you happen to know (faster), sometimes you’re tired (go to bed and try again un the morning) (slower), sometimes there’s a gimmick that you catch on to (faster) or not (slower), etc. I once got to hear Will Shortz speak (Avalon, NJ, maybe 15-20 years ago?), and his good advice was to solve it however and whenever was enjoyable.
@Keith once known as Seward’s folly
I figured out the “rere” and I figured out all the “out of order” signs, but I do not have the kind of brain to make any sense of this. (But the puzzle still got filled, while I was wondering.). Thanks for the explanation!
I had it all solved except for one letter, and then had to read Deb Amien’s column before the lightbulb went on! Fun!
@John I got “Detroit Red” right away, but I did not know about the connection with Redd Foxx!
This was slow going for me until I looked at Google Maps to get the Nashville-Memphis thing, and then the rest fell into place.
I’ll be polite and say that 62 down is certainly a new one to me, and since Google has prior usage examples, I’ll leave it at that.
@Petrol I agree if viewed according to modern spelling and pronunciation rules, but apparently derived from Old German “word”
@Nancy J. Thank you! I blame “too early in the morning”!
Fun and challenging, but is “stressate” actually a word?
I call McGuffin. Happy Sunday to all.
