There's a strip mall in town called Pine Creek. To build the mall, they cut down the pines and paved over the creek. Locals call it Pineless Creekless. I guess I have an advantage on some commenters because I've been to Hawaii and seen (and heard) NENE. There's a long-running Hawaiian music show on local station KVMR where the DJ uses a recording of NENE as the sound bed while he announces. Every time I heard NENE in Hawaii I kept expecting to hear his voice.

I saw the species names in the circles early on but didn't get the before/after connection until all they were all filled but one. But it gave me CAMO so that was nice. As a foreshadowing to todays's theme, we saw two bald eagles performing a mating ritual on Vashon Island yesterday.

@drsophila I believe it's intended temporally, not visually.

Sorry to be picky, but Sees Candy isn't headquartered in San Francisco. It's headquartered in South San Francisco. I was born in San Francisco and grew up in South San Francisco. They're two different cities.

I hear "SketchUp" a lot outside this grid. It's a well-known (in certain circles) 3D design application. It pops up all the time in woodworking.

@Andrzej They're allowed to regulate the A and T more so than the F.

@CCNY In and after high school I had a job filling vending machines. The boss said I could have as much candy and soda as I wanted. (But I couldn't take any cigarettes, so that tells you how long ago this was.) it wasn't long before I didn't want very much.

@Teresa And for the northern Californians among us there's the town of Los Altos Hills.

@Mark Williams Same here. Our director talks to us about our dipthongs all the time in choir. I had to look up the definition to see if it had a different meaning in the real world. Maybe you and I are both pronouncing it wrong.

@Lige You don't have to enter all the letters of the rebus. Just entering the first letter is enough for the app (at least on an iPad) to accept the square. Interestingly (to me anyway), I normally enter all the letters in a rebus but it didn’t even occur to me to do so in this puzzle. Since they were wormholes, I pictured the extra letters existing in a plane outside the grid.

@Helen Wright For some reason, in the depths of my brain, I think I know the W is Westinghouse and the K is Kaiser. I remember one of the TV channels out of San Francisco was Kaiser Broadcasting. Maybe channel 44. Possibly related? Maybe your other Steve knows more. I'm sure Wikipedia does, but where's the fun in that?

@Sonja My went to California State University Humboldt (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emerald_Triangle" target="_blank">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emerald_Triangle</a>) in the 80s. I learned about Sativa and Indica from her. Also, she had a horse and went to vet school so I learned about measuring in hands from her. No second thoughts here!

@Striker Bring your chains. I'm just down the hill from Tahoe and it's pouring rain right now. It's probably dumping snow up there.

@Ed I play the crossword in bed when I'm going to sleep and when I wake up in the middle of the night. If my iPad made noise when I finished the puzzle my wife wouldn't be very happy with me so I keep it silenced. Now I'm going to have to save the last letter for the daytime so I can hear what "hippy music" sounds like! [Rereading before posting, I see you wrote "happy", not "hippy". Ha! I guess I'm less intrigued now.]

@Lauren She's talking about the article, not the puzzle.

@Eric Hougland I was trying to figure out the significance of the colors of the wormholes. Golden Ear is a common term in the audio recording world. There are lots of Red Books (e.g. Mao's and the magazine Redbook). But I couldn't come up with anything for Inch (Blue Inch? Gray Inch? Why isn't Book blue?) it never occurred to me that they're all types of worms. D'oh!
