great puzzle... Marks 4 years of gold stars for me!
Raising hand for people stuck with a CAnE for too long. Favorite NEEDLEDROP: Ragnarok with Zeppelin's Immigrant Song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2defet1tLNs
I liked the puzzle. Got hung up on BRIeCHeesE and GLADTOhelp. 3 years of gold stars.
phew. my streak survived and I'm proud of getting this gold star.
very nice puzzle! smooth and no awkwardness in the cross answers either!
After spending an inordinate amount of time figure out that AWArE wasn't right I won't forget that his name is JK Simmons instead of JR Simmons.
@Matt Congratulations!
@Cat Lady Margaret I heard the researcher Chabris talk about this experiment and the serious real world implications on witness statements. See https://nobaproject.com/modules/failures-of-awareness-the-case-of-inattentional-blindness for a good description of the work. The relevant passage: "Chabris and colleagues simulated a famous police misconduct case in which a Boston police officer was convicted of lying because he claimed not to have seen a brutal beating (Lehr, 2009). At the time, he had been chasing a murder suspect and ran right past the scene of a brutal assault. In Chabris’ simulation, subjects jogged behind an experimenter who ran right past a simulated fight scene. At night, 65 percent missed the fight scene. Even during broad daylight, 44 percent of observers jogged right passed it without noticing, lending some plausibility to the Boston cop’s story that he was telling the truth and never saw the beating."
I loved this one! Very smooth and a nice moment of discovery!
I liked this one. Cool theme and smooth fill.
@Vaer Daikin (apparently a Japanese conglomerate manufacturing company of air conditioning units) is the new name for the baseball field of the Houston Astros, an essential name for crosswordese. I always think of the original name, Enron, also a helpful word for crosswords even if a shameful period in Houston history. In the middle it was Minute Maid Field.
@Morn The ship channel comes up from Galveston Bay all the way up into the east side of the city. Houston runs on oil, the port, and medicine. NASA is here too, but that's in a suburb halfway to Galveston.
