This puzzle was a ruse. The echo clue is not consistent with the blanks squares. Misleading and not thought out.

@David I agree. Solved Tuesday in 6 mins and Wed in 7. Thought I was on a roll. Had to check puzzle to get to the end and still didnt know what the forgone meant. Ah well.
