The parents of a friend in college were both doctors. I took inordinate delight in reminding him they were a pair a' docs.
Technically impressive, but at upon figuring it out I just didn't have that "Wow, that's really clever!" moment that some puzzles give me. Maybe it's just me, but it's more ox than fox.
I was pretty sure of HEART TRANSPLANT, but when it didn't fit I thought, jeez, I CAN'T SEE STRAIGHT. But I eventually got the trick and used it on the other circled-letter answers - one of the few times in my fairly short crosswording career that the theme has actually helped with the solve. Lots of fun!
Great puzzle. A bit frustrating before I figured out the trick, but the payoff was so satisfying!
Made me smiiiiiiiiiiiiile!
Always thought it was 'hut..' without really every thinking about it. "Aptt" looked weird, but it took me an embarrassingly long time to get to 'hup,' which also looks weird. Yes, that's a personal problem, and despite it I thoroughly enjoyed this clever puzzle (and I actually miss inflight magazines, too).
Had trouble with the second letter-shaped bit of hardware; thought of D-ring, for some reason, and, never having had a McFlurry of any flavor, that was no help. So I concluded that I'm just not an O-ringinal thinker.
Smew was new to me. Guess I have to bone up on my northern European ducks....
I don't get all the CUKE hate. Too, me awhile to come up with it, but that's not unusual for me.... Clever, fun puzzle.
@Hugh I thought it was a made-up word, and should have been clued with a question mark. Upon looking it up, I found out it's an actual word with usage going back a couple hundred years. So I learned something new, and now I'm going to find an occasion to use it.
Took me much longer than my normal Tuesday time to solve. Whether this means it was tougher than a normal Tuesday or I was having a bad day, I don't know.
@Jay Werba Thanks, I had the same question! And thanks to Andrzej for the explanation.
Who puts vanilla in an apple tart? Maybe someone on an acid trip....
@Spencer L Ah, thank you! Now I feel dense and old....
Great puzzle, though, and maybe I'll try it next time I make an apple tart!
@Ken Me too! Seemed odd that the editors would allow the texty shorthand 'u' for 'you,' and Anya is much less common than Anna, but u never know these days, do u?
@Shmi Oarsmen (and women) row in racing shells.
@Megan Another meatwaves here. Does one eat a lot of meat when baking? Meh, probably not.
@Gabe I'd throw my two cents in, but you only need half of that to answer your question.
@jes It's short for detective, I'm guessing?
Okay, I hope I'm not being dense, but ... do GOSSIPERs often bring tea? I got it, but I still don't get it. Feel like I'm missing the joke. Can someone please explain? Thanks.
