I enjoyed this theme - wordplay like this is what makes crosswords fun for me! The most confusing thing was the Gameplay title - I was scouring the clues to see where I missed "Where Lines May Be Drawn in the Sand" and honestly I'm still at sea (pun intended).
@Lewis yes!!! So many levels of clever- I didn’t realize the words spelled out types of trees until I thought I’d already solved the theme!!
I realized there was something happening with POL(EGRET)IST with the crosses. I think I might have been able to solve the whole thing without the shaded squares, but it certainly would have taken a LOT longer, and would have relied on getting at least two down answers before each theme entry. The shading plus revealer meant I put it all together after 17A and was able to use it to solve the rest! A very fun puzzle! (And as born Masshole, I was excited to see Mahky Mahk)
@Jess 39D especially! I had to get every cross and it still doesn't look like a real word - maybe I'm not ON IN YEARS enough!
54D is such a clever clue, I literally laughed aloud and shared it with friends (or should I say amis)
@Dale M I had the same thought with 1A! In part because [Buds] isn't gendered but the answer typically only refers to men/boys.
