How in the world is this an acceptable puzzle, let alone for a Tuesday? DASHIT may have been acceptable in 1733. SENSATE, NYUORICAN, SHAH, INNO, ARO, SAHL, MAO, EAP, ERG, AREPAS are all terrible entries, and most of them gluey at best. Allowing this as acceptable is becoming a Fagliano trademark in the worst possible way.
This puzzle made no sense on the iPhone app; nothing was underlined in the clues. Absolutely terrible, NYT, that you’d allow this to happen.
@Joya you’ve never heard anyone say DASHIT because you weren’t alive in the 1700s.
I’ve been refraining from commenting on this, but Joel Fagliano has a LONG way to go before he takes full control of the prestigious role of the NYT XWORD editor. There are so many words and clues and glue that would never pass muster. EARTHA, LUSAKA, ALTI, ICEBAG (that’s not a thing….seriously, who has ever said “i need an ice bag”?), EARLAPS, HAULUP (very rarely used), API all on a Tuesday? This is definitely not the first complaint I’ve had with the editing, and it definitely won’t be the last. I really want Mr. Fagliano to succeed, but a lot of works needs to be done.
Something isn’t right. CHANGETHEPATHOFAHURRICANE doesn’t fit at 15A
Great puzzle! Very clever theme. Absolutely loved it. But how in the world is this a Tuesday? This is Thursday material, Wednesday at worst. This is too tricky for the average Tuesday solver. Not understanding a lot of Fagliano’s editorial decisions. Speaking of, Saturday’s puzzle had a MASSIVE no-no slip through the cracks. SANTA was used in both a clue and an answer. How in the world was that missed? Unless, he’s changing the rules of crossword construction?
it’s been a minute since i’ve truly enjoyed the trickiness of a Thursday puzzle. This one was fantastic. Best Thursday in a long time.
Wonderful puzzle. Fantastic long entries. Well done!
Ok I know I can’t be the only one who is irked by MON AMIE. “Amie” is feminine, so it should be MA AMIE. “MA” = feminine, “MON” = masculine. MON AMI would be correct if you’re using “MON”.
To say Aldi and Gap are “big box stores” is quite a stretch. In fact, Aldi is the OPPOSITE of a big box store, and Gap is an apparel retailer…which is not a big box store. And POSE appears twice? Since when did NYT start allowing repeat words in answers? POSE and POSES in this context are not different enough to justify allowing duplication in answers. I’d love to hear Will’s justification here. I got STRIKEAPOSE first, and then I got stuck for a bit because I was like, “It has to be YOGAPOSES, but there’s no way that can be right.” Absolutely nothing against Joe Deeney…I always enjoy his puzzles, and this was very well constructed as always. This was a failure at the Editorial level.
@Lewis I gave up after 30 :(
