Do you ever feel like a puzzle is made for you? New Friday record, and I had a wonderful time solving! Happy Friday everyone
Well done Colin Adams! This puzzle put many smiles on my face - I had to google two things (yes, one of them was AZOV), but this was my first time confidently filling a Friday and being pleasantly surprised when the finale jingle arrived. Happy Friday everyone!
Couldn’t align and agree more with your comment! I was also busy with family things this weekend and didn’t get far with the weekend puzzles (but it’s NBD since I am not speedy/dedicated enough to keep streaks (yet)). Love the weekdays though, especially Monday & Friday puzzles! PEAS made me smile, and the common phrase is how I described my two similarly-sized dynamic-duo rescue dogs on a W-A-L-K at the park earlier today. They take a stop-and-sniff approach, typically trotting in unison, ears flopping, tails wagging, hip-to-hip while zigzagging across the sidewalk towards the next tree or curiosity. As small, scruffy terriers with profoundly fascinating personalities and tendencies, I KID YOU NOT they are two of my favorite things on this planet.
I really enjoyed solving this puzzle, and I especially enjoyed reading Will’s column and salutations to Deb. Bravo to the constructors, and thank you both for inspiring me to take the leap into crossword construction… I’m excited to find an experienced constructor and bring up that all-women collaborator statistic! Lastly, happy birthday to my fellow Capricorns (Jan 9th over here!
This comment is everything - Luigi is vastly under-appreciated and frequently unrecognized beyond just being Player 2’s character. Thank you for quibbling & please do it again sometime
If you’re reading this, you’ve probably grown accustomed to the ~crosswordese~ of various French words, Japanese beer & dog breeds, and few-lettered avian names (looking at you, emu!). But ADIOS AMIGO, in the recent Friday puzzle and now today, is something I didn’t expect to see again so soon! Adios Emugo (Am-emu?)!
13 vowels in a row, WHO DOES THAT?! So close to beating my PB, I thoroughly enjoyed this solve!
Thoroughly enjoyed every second of this solve, and loved the column just as equally. Filled the puzzle completely and wasn’t met with the music until I discovered, OH My, one typo. Sam, I couldn’t agree more with your stance on space; yes, we are a mere speck in the grand scheme of it all, but what a wonderful idea that can lend itself to be. Happy Wednesday everyone! Do emus have humps?
I more commonly say, “ain’t my first rodeo,” but don’t worry - this was NOT MY FIRST RODEO. (With theme-phrase synonyms, that is)
New Tuesday PB! Completed the grid and came to the column to locate my one typo - realized too late there was something off about EATEd lol. Lots of L’s and U’s in this one - nice variety of clueing with no Oreos, Japanese beer, or names/proper nouns I’m not familiar with, which made this a refreshing and enjoyable solve during my commute. Thanks Nate! Picturing an emu in knee-high latex platform boots.
Really enjoyed this puzzle. Breezed through some of the modern colloquial fill with satisfying lucky guesses, but got stuck in a few areas. Felt rectitudinous for a Friday, IMO.
@Andrew I came here to acknowledge the same thing. It initially had me second-guessing myself, as if all the ‘UPs’ were a mistake. Then it had me wondering if it was intentionally theme-adjacent, correlated to the ‘P’ within ‘MPT’ of EMPTY CALORIES… Maybe that’s a stretch. Emus, while tall, can’t go too high up.
Really enjoyed this puzzle - 3 seconds shy of my current PB, which I didn’t realize until after completing (I was simply enjoying the solve) :’) Looking forward to more puzzles by Shannon & Will Did anyone else stare at 48D and attempt pronunciation in your head 10 times?
I’m mid-solve and came to the column, as one does! Could someone explain to me why the semicolon is outside of the quotation marks in this sentence: “…some previous grids as “crunchy” or “chewy”; such puzzles contain unusual entries or answers…” I thought that any punctuation goes inside the quotation mark no matter what (even if unrelated to what is being quoted). My job includes a lot of writing, I’d love if someone could chime in!
@MA if you’re opening the bonus on your phone’s web browser, maybe try zooming out the screen? (The zoom button might look like: aA )
Also, could someone enlighten me on what an ‘enter missive’ is?
