I feel so bad for Christina and Chase. Would have been a lovely Thursday, if not for the unforgivable lack of testing. Given the long lead times before submission of a crossword and publication, is it too much to ask to have a small team of (volunteer?) beta testers to check the different platforms before going live?
Congratulations on a solo debut and smooth solve. My woeful ignorance of both hip-hop time-signatures and catwalk jargon (mis)lead me to RAP/POSEE.
A “With ‘An’” cluing suffix for OPENENDER, might have saved me several minutes of chasing down the final offending ‘D’. Lovely debut nonetheless and an impressive time to go from newbie solver to published NYT constructor.
@Divs The See refers to the Holy See which is a synonym for the Vatican (or the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Rome)
@Steve L My first encounter with SQUEE was during the contested confirmation hearings of Brett Kavanaugh. <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/02/us/brett-kavanaugh-georgetown-prep.html" target="_blank">https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/02/us/brett-kavanaugh-georgetown-prep.html</a>
Loved N-TUPLE and SUNK COST FALLACY (which I recently used to describe an addiction - even while on vacation - to maintaining one’s streak! <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/01/29/crosswords/daily-puzzle-2024-01-30.html#commentsContainer&permid=130803658:130805416" target="_blank">https://www.nytimes.com/2024/01/29/crosswords/daily-puzzle-2024-01-30.html#commentsContainer&permid=130803658:130805416</a>)
That was a really spectacular construction. Well done on your debut, Mr McMahon!
@Steven M. This rookie was redirected by the even more basic BASEBALLPLAYERS!
@Tom S. Indeed. My first thought on reading that monologue was “Let me play the world’s smallest violin for you”
Lovely, elegant construction. Thanks, Brandon. I was fortunate to solve on iOS, but the howls of pain coming from other platforms are really unacceptable. Please, please NYTGames invest in some decent tech resource! (Imagine a newspaper that didn’t bother to employ decent proofreaders or sub-editors) You owe it to your marvellous constructors to showcase their fine work.
@Vicky Weil es die Arbeit des Kreuzworträtsel-Autors einfacher macht? :)
I find it quite extraordinary (given the level of revenue the crossword brings in) how often basic usability errors like this occur. Imagine if there were spelling mistakes in the grid! That’s how basic this is.
@Martin Benjamin The logo is so distinctive for this non-American that LEAF & EXCUSEZ-MOI made 6-Down EZ for me!
@Wayne Harrison Well done! I’m sure many of us can identify with the overachieving cruciverbalist’s version of the sunk-cost fallacy 😂
I had brainSTEM as the ‘end of a noodle’. Wrong end (aim), it seems!
Could someone please help me understand READDS for ‘Check one’s math(s)’?
Very satisfying! This one’s difficulty didn’t LIGHTEN UP at all.
Please ignore my previous comment. Re: RE-ADDS
Loved this deliciously baked puzzle. Wednesday fill with Thursday spice. Last to fall was LIRA/?maRk
@TMD Thanks! That explains it perfectly. I've been wondering about this for years.
@Doog 90% of this - self-selecting - group of solvers completed this Sunday slower than their average time. So you're in good company. <a href="https://xwstats.com/puzzles/2024-11-10" target="_blank">https://xwstats.com/puzzles/2024-11-10</a>
