I didn’t interpret the triangle as one chip and the circle a second chip as Deb says, but as a triangular chip and round bowl. After all if you have two chips you are not double dipping, George dipped the same chip twice!
“Safety school” almost certainly refers to a high school senior’s second or third choice of college that they apply to as a fallback in case they don’t get into their first choice.
@Evon Definitely agree. As a 30 year member of the ACS I’ve never used Apolar. That clue stumped me for a while.
Creative liberty (same number of letters, first two letters and fourth letter the same as the correct answer) ruined my south east corner for quite a while.
@wlieu about 25 years ago the Co-oP in Berkeley changed their signs to “fewer”, and it sparked a change all over the east bay, at least. When I saw this clue was surprised the NYTimes would help enforce this bad grammar since the correct grammar in this widely known phrase helps figure out in other situations what the proper wording should be.
