I would consider that "mowed" emphasizes an action (mowing) that has been completed ("I mowed the lawn"), whereas "mown" tends to be used in its adjectival form ("That lawn looks well mown!") (even though "mown" is indeed an accepted past participle of the verb ("The lawn has been mown").
53 DOWN: "Hospital glove material" The clue is incorrect. Many patients, especially those born with meningomyelocele ("Spina Bifida") are allergic to latex. Latex on intact skin is generally OK, but exposure of internal tissue membranes can generate severe reactions. To avoid the myriad problems in stocking 2 different types of gloves, hospitals order latex-free gloves exclusively.
@SBK @John Peil Apparently "contronym" is an approved alternative spelling of "contranym". However, "contra" seems far more appropriate, given its "anti" meaning. I do not know how "contro" came into play.
