@Steve L Chance: long a. Chants: short a, and I do sound the t. My "Aussie pronunciation" is via Yorkshire, UK and the RP I grew up with, so I don't speak standard Strine. I'm not claiming they sound "the same" but I needed the explanation! Thanks for your reply, and I do think you're right that the vowel sound is the determining factor.

For me, sorting out the braided answers was the key to solving the hairstyle clue, since I'd never heard of the style, the film or the actor!
