What an excellent Friday puzzle! But I think I'm going to take my opportunity to be that guy today and pick a nit-- networks are comprised of NODES and EDGES, the latter forming the connections. Nodes are the entities being connected, not the connections themselves. I don't think it was a bad clue, you could argue that a "connection" refers to joining up with the destination node. But if I don't say something then that graph theory class I took will be wasted!
Came to the comments expecting praise for this amazing construction... a little surprised at the disparaging remarks. I loved the shared theme with different tricks-- I felt like it made for a dynamic solving experience. One of my favorites of the year! I'm usually kind of on board when most of the comments think a puzzle was too opaque, so maybe I just got lucky today.
Well I had fun. Usually I can kind of tell when the comments are going to be negative, but I was pretty surprised by this one. It was hard for me, and took me a long time, but felt like it was a great challenge. Though maybe it's because I knew GUIDO, and I never know trivia clues.
@MFSTEVE I guess it's an earflap that doesn't give an "f".
VAMOOSE was new to me. I usually just hear "vamos" or "vamanos". Will try to remember this. What with all the vowels.
@Jenny I always recommend this to my friends who are interested in crosswords but feel like they're too hard. A lot of the time they're jumping into a Saturday for their first go and don't realize the differences in difficulty/theme throughout the week! I started by going through Mondays and was amazed how quickly the familiarity with crosswordese helped me move through to the harder puzzles.
@marty You write as though a gimmick is a bad thing.
@Janine To quote the great Edna Mode: "NO CAPES!"
@Dave I got Berenstained in the exact same way, I could not figure it out!
@pacer9 I came here to see someone reference Lisp! What a great construction today.
@Josh I had the same thought after DUTCH OVEN, and then I thought arbiter as ARizona biter... but then I realized AR was Arkansas and DE is Germany. But I kept trying that line of thought anyway.
@Pat Pasts tense of cat-sit. Like babysitting but for a cat.
@Barry Ancona Thank you! I had TAD/AMAN/DING instead of TIP/IMAN/PING and I was so confused since I was unfamiliar with the actress.
