Found this good fun :) Of course everyone is free to express their opinion, but I’m always a bit disappointed when a large number of the comments here are negative. I’m thankful we have clever people like Mr. Musa to provide puzzles for this fun little hobby of ours.
2712 total puzzles solved, been doing crosswords consistently for the better part of five years, and I finally feel confident that I can take on Fridays and Saturdays without lookups (most of the time). These past two puzzles have been such fun. For anyone just getting started: keep with it and don’t feel bad if you have to look things up. I don’t think “cheat” is the right word.
Loved it! One of the better puzzles of the year.
ROTGUT, CHUG, NAUSEATED, and PURGES all in one puzzle! Please enjoy responsibly.
@Jake G Can’t think of much less harmful than someone posting clever little puns on a message board. If this is what irks you… I don’t know what to say. Maybe you ought to indulge yourself a little more. Keep it up, Mike! Love the puns.
@KFC Honestly, being “smart” has so much less to do with it than just doing a ton of crosswords lol. I promise if you keep at it long enough you’ll be able to do any day of the week without cheats*. * “cheat” all you want if that’s what makes it fun for you.
Fun but quite easy for a Thursday.
Hardly ever comment, but this one was fantastic. Great job.
Congrats on the puzzle! Loved the theme. Hope to see more from you in the future!
Just happen to be reading both Gravity’s Rainbow and a bit of FICHTE right now, so that helped. (Don’t ask me to elaborate on either.)
Very satisfying puzzle. SE gave me trouble but fell into place once I gave up on INSIDE DATA.
Committed the sin of forgetting Edison’s middle name. Shame.
@Steven M. Perhaps Iceland was used as a misdirect given that country’s many volcanoes. Still, I’m inclined to agree with you.
@Andrzej I hear you. I don’t always read or participate in this thread, but I’ve enjoyed what I’ve read of your commentary, positive and negative. I could have been more specific in my original post. I’m not going to cite examples, but I have no problem at all with pointed criticism. After all, this is a service we pay for, and we’d all like a high standard of quality. What bristles me is when comments are disdainful toward a puzzle or constructor. Perhaps it’s because there are so many things more worthy and even demanding of our disdain.
DASANI and LARGE COKE? Are we missing some sponsorship disclaimer?
Been a while since I was in a math class, but fairly certain COS is not a derivative of sine. It’s not even possible to definitively determine the cosine knowing just the sine (e.g. if sin = 0 then cos can equal 1 or -1). Csc would be the more appropriate answer here. However, if anyone more math-y than I can show I’m misguided, I’m happy to learn something new.
@Cindy 8 seconds for me. So close!
@Saffie 993 for me! Got me by one week.
Can someone please help me understand how [Chestnuts] clues to OLDSAWS. Thanks. Google was no help.
@Evan Hope this wasn’t seen as bragging! It’s more an admission of obsession than anything else. It was meant to demonstrate to new and new-ish solvers that when it comes to puzzles (like most things in life but especially crosswords) competence comes with practice. Also, I never would have gotten to this point had I been puritanical about “cheating,” so “cheat” away if that’s what’s most fun for you. Cheers.
@Evan Lol thanks y’all. Actually should have caught on to that one.
