Ah, the power of wishful thinking. You see bicfoot and want to believe you've seen BigFoot. This was a fun one, thanks Kevin and Jeff. Helene left me without power for 3 days and without internet for another day past that. No AC, no coffee in the morning, lots of tree branches down, lost some roof shingles, lost all the food in fridge. But blessedly, no lights ruining the night sky. Exceedingly fortunate that we only caught the edge of that storm. Some tornado damage in the county, but not the disastrous conditions that most of Georgia suffered.

"If I had a nickel for every time I thought of a long, fun, debut entry, then put the entry right in the center of my puzzle, and several months later, another themeless puzzle with the exact same entry ran before mine, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice." So it happens all the dime, Malaika. (Enjoyed the puzzle. Smooth with just a bit of crunch.)

What? Why? I did this puzzle late last night. But I don't get it. I admit I'm not firing on all cylinders this morning, I got maybe 3 hours of sleep. I understand it's a snarky recap. A la summarizing War and Peace as "Everyone is sad. It snows." --- that's funny. But this reimagining of the Frost poem is not clever, is not funny, and doesn't even rhyme. Meh. Disappointing for a Thursday. Okay, I'll go read the column and find Lewis' comments, in hopes of an attitude adjustment. Maybe the emus pegged this one at us.

35D, Ninja's forte, 7 letters. That's gotta be TURTLES, right? That's where my mutant brain went. Cursed insomnia. I solved this puzzle in the wee hours today. Thanks, Bill, clever theme, and wide-ranging references. Now, where can I get some APPLE BETTY and Linzer TORTE for breakfast? My mother used to make apple betty, and blueberry crumble, and peach cobbler, and all those good old-fashioned desserts. And she loves crossword puzzles. She had a fall late Sunday night, and went into hospital. Ergo my insomnia. I'll be traveling up to help her, so my internet access will be sporadic for a few weeks.

It's not fair. This is not a crossword puzzle! How can I put two letters in a square? ----380 comments already by 9 am, so the rebus haters have already chimed in. It is easy to put multiple letters in a square if you solve pen on paper or chisel on stone. Luddites for the win! Anyway, I saw the need to double up letters early on. Once you recognized the trick of doubling on the edges, this puzzle solved rather quickly. And cold pizza is a great breakfast.

@Behind a book Ermagherd! Religion is a part of a society's culture, and part of being aware of the world around you. A crossword solver should have a nodding acquaintance with the terms of the world's main religions just as one should have some awareness of sports terms and teams, or geography and history, or music and movies. Knowing that the TORAH is a religious book is not going to convert you to the Jewish religion any more than knowing Earned Run AverageS is going to turn me into a baseball fan.

Satisfy a midday craving? Would that be for nooners, naps, tokes, or smokes? I was totally at sea on my first pass through this puzzle, did not enter a single answer. Almost every clue suggested multiple answers or no answer at all. Took a break, finished my coffee and bagel, then slowly started again, from the bottom. Whew. Ooops, make that PHEW. Do flashers bARe or WARN? Airways, flyways, or SKYWAYS? GEE WHIZ. Good chewy puzzle, Katie.
