While I enjoyed the clue, I recently learned that in fact brook trout are not TROUTS at all! They are a species of char! On the other hand, today I discovered what a flathead trout is, so I'll call it even 🙂
@Grumpy Excellent citation! I mentioned this elsewhere, but my only actual qualm is that brook "trout", despite their name, are actually char, not trout. Same with their cousin, the lake trout. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brook_trout https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_trout A bit of obscure fishy trivia for a Saturday.
@Whoa Nellie Agreed, this one actually had me legitimately stuck for a little bit. Doubled my normal time.
@Mark Smith Indeed! I think this was meant as one of those grammatically vague "plural of plurals". I'm not defending it exactly, but in my head it's similar to the way you would say person > people for one or many individuals, but might refer to multiple larger ethnic groups gathered in one area as "peoples" (All the peoples of the earth were there). In either case, imagine my surprise at learning their true identity after spending 30+ years catching brook trout!
