As CNS says before me, "Poet written about in the Books of Tang" -- who has even HEARD of that reference? -- for LIPO instead of "weight reduction procedure, informally" is just too much badassery for a Tuesday puzzle. I liked the resst of it, though.
Really nice puzzle. The fact that the differences between the key word pairs were exact transpositions of the last two letters was really impressive. Congratulations to the constructor!
Great puzzle for an experienced constructor -- absolutely incredible for 14-year-old! Congratulations!! As a 77-year-old who's been doing crosswords since I was your age, I'm completely blown away by this effort. And as someone who's been involved in the entertainment businesses for a similar amount of time and has an Academy Award winner living up the street from me, I'm not easily impressed.
I'm sorry, but the whole point of a crossword puzzle is to fit answers within the boundaries of the grid selected. Having an answer extend beyond the border, to me, is completely illegitimate. If a constructor can't stay within the grid, the constructer should keep trying until another word or phrase fits. I might be better disposed to this chicanery if the "extra" letters were B, R, U, N, C and H.
Having read through abut 50 comments, I can see that some people loved this puzzle/construction and some people hated it. Put me down in the admiring camp.
A wonderful puzzle, especially for a debut, and good luck and may God bless to Deb!
Great puzzle! Once I read "Today's Theme," which may to purists be cheating, I found this a wonderful challenge (it took me an hour) but of course the pangram aspect went right over my head. I don't normally like rebus puzzles, but this one is an exception. Congratulations to the constructor!
Whimsical and amusing! A pleasant and appreciated departure from the news articles. Thanks!
Sorry, not a fan despite the cleverness, and anyone who says the "horse pun" was a cleverly-hidden clue rather than a bad dad joke is just making excuses. After half an hour getting little more than a quarter of the way through, I broke down and read the "GamePlay" and finished the puzzle in 5 minutes, which should show how poorly conceived this idea was.
Congratulations -- a very nice accomplishment for a pre-high-school-graduate! My niece took her last final (a 6-hour math test!) at SDSU last Wednesday. Too bad you won't have a chance to meet her! Good luck with all your endeavors!!
I'm not a fan of rebus puzzles in general, and this one was far too obscure to figure out on my own. I agree wholeheartedly with PFC and R. J. Smith, below.
@Barry Ancona So you think that the constructor is going to learn anything from uncritical praise? "Complaining," as you defensively put it, will probably impel this constructor to never use a clue as irritatingly awful as "baby blue" for "peeper," which easily made my Hall-of-Shame collection.
@Jonathan Agree with you 1,000% on "pah" and "rec" -- even after Mike explained "rec," I still think it's illegitimate.
Nice puzzle, great clues, but I second Deb's and Gus's reservations about "SOO."
Very nice puzzle with a clever theme leading to a quick smooth solve once I noticed the third "re," but never in my life have I encountered the phrase "hive mind" in print or conversation.
Nice puzzle, but "Make a run for it!" -- SEAT????
How does "FAME" relate to Enos Slaughter? Aren't there only four starred clues aside from the revealer??
