@Bellevue Bob Everyday? I just checked the past week of puzzles and didn’t see a single clue about transgender people other than the one in this puzzle. Perhaps you are referring to clues related to pronouns? But if you associate any reference to a part of speech used in nearly every sentence spoken in the English language as a secret political demonstration about trans people rather than an accessible way to clue answers that are quite literally pronouns… the real question is why are you so obsessed with trans people?

I love crosswords because some people find one puzzle too easy for a given day and others find the same too hard. Shows we all have different knowledge, experiences, and fun facts lodged away in our brains. For me, this was a fast thrill! A luck of the draw with many clues catered to my knowledge base. Next week, I’ll likely return to my 30-45 minute Fridays with one or two look-ups. But today I’m relishing in my new personal Friday record—15 minutes!! Without any wikipedia usage (lol)!! 💃🏼💃🏼💃🏼

@Bruce Just wanted to say that I appreciate your ability to share where you struggle and not immediately blame the constructor and editor like so many people on here do. When I have a puzzle that I need to cheat on, I try to remember the little facts and tidbits I learn from the answers. “Hey Ya” is a very fun classic from the duo OutKast (Andre 3000 was one of two if you’ve heard of him? He dropped an instrumental album that surprised many featuring his phenomenal flute playing in 2023). “Ms. Jackson” is another classic. I really like “SpottieOttieDopalicious” (some amazingly clever lines that I think a crossword player would appreciate) And try some flautas sometime at a mexican restaurant (unless you’re gluten-free… stick with taquitos that use corn tortillas instead lol). Tasty tasty! Then you’ll remember them forever the next. Cheers to learning new things and continuing the solving journey!

Feeling alone in my struggles in the SE corner when everyone seemed stumped on what to me were the obvious answers! I’m always amazed at how the same puzzle can feel so different for everyone. Maybe some of the complainers on here could benefit from remembering humble humility every once in a while. I enjoy when puzzles benefit different subsets of knowledge, even if it means hitting what for *me* might feel like an occasional natick on a Friday or Saturday—odds or those crosses are a blessing for someone else. And I hope BAYARD RUSTIN becomes a household name in time!

I was held up for too long by my misspelling of BERMUDA. I had an U for the first E. Which made sense in my mind for 35A. [Gig makeup?] Oh, yeah, MUGS. Because drag queens call their painted faces that they prep for gigs “mugs.” Oof, guess the start of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 17 has been occupying my mind!

I finished the puzzle but am confused by the clue 7/ and the answer JUL. Can someone explain that one to me?

So many folks seemed to get the theme with MAD AS HELL. Hats off to you all, because I couldn’t catch it until BEEFEATER came into view! But maybe that means I’m just too familiar with gin 😅

@Vj One did the movie, the other did the musical. And I can never remember which is which… lol. Fortunately for crosswords, both have different amounts of letters :)

Fun Fact… I couldn’t even figure out what any of the missing “double” letters were… fortunately, didn’t matter. lol Also… does anyone else despise the clues like DOTTEDI and LONGOS? They are so annoying to me! I mean, don’t get me wrong, they’re a creative method for some odd letter arrangements, but ughhhh. How do you all catch them?? I’m always stuck trying to think of a punny answer rather than looking at the letters themselves… 😩

@JohnWM You are not entitled to easily solving a puzzle You are not entitled to easily solving a puzzle You are not entitled to easily solving a puzzle You are not untitled to easily solving a puzzle I will never understand the commenters who go awry on these posts when a puzzlemaker does something different than they expect.

@Barry Ancona I find your insinuation that this puzzle was full of obscure trivia surprising. I went to play your linked puzzle and was immediately hit with 3 clues in the top left corner that felt like obscure trivia to *me*. I don’t know generals, French physicists, or what BPOE stands for. If I committed to the whole puzzle, I’d hope I could start filling in crosses and figure them out. In nearly every puzzle the Times publishes, I see a comment along these lines. Might some trivia deemed “obscure” for you be common knowledge for another? I expect crossword puzzle clues to change as time passes. When I started to do the puzzle in your link, I struggled with the clues more than I do with current puzzles. Likely because I am a different age or of different cultural experience than you. Or a byproduct of two puzzles created at different times. I checked this Sunday’s puzzle again after seeing a few comments along your lines. There were a few names or trivia that I also did not know, but I figured them out via crossing words and some educated guesses for spellings. For example, when I had STE_IE, I thought a W made the most sense. Obscur for me, but now I know something new about a sport rising in popularity (women’s basketball). In the grand scheme of things, I am relatively new to crosswords. Maybe there’ll come a day when I find the clueing annoying or too niche. But I hope I remain open to what I learn from the process.

I love how multiple people can experience the same crossword so differently. From the comments, I can see that many folks struggled with ADUE/ADIN/GUNLAP. For me, that section was a breeze, probably because I had tennis scoring drilled into my brain as a kid. Meanwhile, I was on the struggle bus with HOTDOGS/OCALA/HASAT. Based on the comments, it seems it was a struggle bus of one 😅. Just goes to show that we are all on our own solving journeys. Fun puzzle overall!

Genuine question. What part of the US calls chocolate/vanilla soft-serve mix a TWIRL? I’ve only heard TWIST and am very curious!
