I would love this puzzle any day of the week. Did I look over at my husband halfway through and say, "Wait. It is Wednesday, right?" Yes. Did I solve it within one second of my average Thursday time? Also yes. Was it all worth it when I figured out the trick and was able to fill in 3 long answers all at once? Absolutely, yes!
Great puzzle, I loved the theme, once I got it thanks to the column. I did get tripped up in the NW corner by confidently entering "wiener roast" over the less formal "weenie roast" and then trying to shoehorn the other answers in. ("Huh, I never realized Suni Lee spelt her name L-e-i" and "....What in the world is west of the Bering Strait, besides Asia?") I thought the cluing was great. Was my solve 3 minutes over my average Tuesday time? Absolutely! Enjoyed every second of it.
@John That's what "a phonetic hint" means. The hint went over my head until after I'd finished the puzzle, though.
I'm still chuckling over the theme clues and answers, impatiently waiting for my husband to finish his chapter so I can share them with him.
@Sarah Horn The bulk of Oklahoma is further south than the northernmost border of Texas.
@Boaz Moser ICE RAIN appeared in another puzzle not too long ago. I was incensed at the time, but excited to be able to put the new-to-me term to use in this delightfully tricky-but-doable puzzle.
