Not sure how this is fair. The squares are black to indicate that there isn't a letter in that square. This puzzle is going in the bin.

Absolutely baffling even with the explanation. A friend suggested that this was a good crossword but apparently basic crossword rules can be ignored? I also don't see how the word rebus applies here. I will stick to my regular cryptics.
