@Robert Forbes omg yessss thank you, this made me absolutely FURIOUS!! my initial reaction was they should have at least acknowledged that declawing is now widely condemned as animal abuse instead of using such a sanitized/passive clue. but on second thought, i don’t think it should even be used as a puzzle word at all. god forbid someone who’s never heard of the procedure learns about it from a deceivingly neutral crossword clue and assumes it’s just a normal part of owning a cat. it’s the same cringe feeling i get whenever “sable” or “mink” are clued as luxury furs, completely glossing over the cruelty behind them. 💔
