@History Teacher The clue doesn’t say all Muslim women, though. And, typically, it is only Muslim women who wear niqabs, no?
@Peter C Huh. I got a gold star entering both state abbreviations in one box, no slash.
@Heidi I know — I was hoping for some fanfare or an animation after solving the puzzle in app. 🎉
Very playful. Such a fun solve!
One of those themeless Friday puzzles where I just felt in a mind meld with the constructor. Hummed right along, delighted by the word play and misdirections in the clues.
@Matt I don’t think the title had to do with politics, but rather swinging from one state abbreviation to another in the rebus square, depending on whether one was reading the down or across solution?
Somebody tell the guys that a SHAG is not a “piled high” ‘do. A shag is a layered haircut.
@Justin Ah, touché. Another SE groaner.
@Nora One pace is two strides, if that helps.
I lost my 235 day gold star streak on Jan 2 thanks to illness and forgetting to do the puzzle, but I’m glad because I would’ve been so annoyed to lose my streak today on this one. Very tortured clueing from Sam E.
I’ve got one: Parker Posey’s dipthonged elision on _The White Lotus_? CONTRACTION PROTRACTION “Piiie-per, dooooohhhuuuunt!!!”
@Mr Dave A roll of pennies, no less: ties into the crossword theme.
Very playful clueing! Good unthemed, Saturday puzzle. Starting in the southeast quadrant, I tried WILDEBEEST, for 30D, before quickly realizing, from the crosses, the correct animal solution. I also loved all the “Q” words in that quadrant. And learning the etymology of 22A.
@LarryF Black wildebeest apparently are, though! (As opposed to blue.)
@Aletheia Wait, no. It just tacked on the eight minutes to my total time from previous. Fair.
The Lascivious Ball at UChicago’s I-House was famously scantily clad: $1 per article of clothing, though I think not fully nude, not in the grunge-y ‘90s anyway, when I was there.
I thought this one was super fun, lively! I was stumped at first, but then I started working bottom-up, and the whole thing came together in a flash!
Hrrmm, I don’t think 42A works, since a WASH would be a tie. This is not the meaning of a zero-sum game: a winner who takes all and a loser.
@Barry Ancona where does one find such stats?
@Rich in Atlanta I solve on my phone, so no numbers available without extra steps. Good tip on a standard keyboard, though.
@HeathieJ yes, that’s how I check too!
@Aletheia Thanks to those who chimed in. I ended up clearing the whole puzzle, resetting the timer, and filling it all in anew. Gold star! (Though now my “best time” on a Sunday is no longer accurate. Oh well!)
@Kevin D HaHa. Well, elves though.
@Nicola Thank you for chiming in.
Not sure what to do. I completed the puzzle in 23:02 min, but have spent the last 12+ minutes searching for a typo that just isn’t there. Finally resorted to checking with someone else who completed and got their star; no errors on my fill. Glitch? Hope I’m not going to lose my 4 month gold star streak. :(
@Linda Jo I also liked ADIOS / HOLLA (I know, not both Spanish, but close!)
