I solved it because of the crossing clues but not very satisfying, because I never played the game. It wasn't hard to figure out that it was about Suiper Mario Brothers but the question mark boxes and pipes were meaningless to me. I imagine it would have been very easy for someone who did play the game. Too specific and narrow a subject for a NYT puzzle I think.
