There have been quite a few puzzles this year that I've really enjoyed. This one is at the top of the list. It was neatly themed, perfect for the day, and a bit silly. The RNA/dNA crossing kept me from the good music for an extra couple of minutes. Super fun, thank you. Now where'd I leave my SkyMall catalog?
@Jeff I was curious, so I went back to do it. Took me about double my average time. There were some real toughies in there (and a couple of ridiculous clue/answer combos), but I wonder how many of those would have been at least semi-regular occurrences that were in the rotation. I would imagine age has a lot to do with it. I was 11 when that 1995 debuted, so the older references and outdated language were pretty difficult for me to figure out. I needed several lookups. If that puzzle had debuted today, there would have been 1000 comments saying how unfair it was. If today's puzzle debuted in 2055, I could imagine it seeming just as difficult to that audience. Still, it was pretty fun, and if it taught me one thing, there are three absolutes in this life - death, taxes, and OREO being an answer to a clue. Thanks to you (and Ms. Lovinger) for prompting me to check out that puzzle!
I don't know if this constructor reads the comments, but consider me one who found this puzzle very tough. I didn't get the theme until i had no choice but to figure it out because I couldn't solve some of the crosses. Finally understood the theme with DUTCHOVEN, but that was 45 minutes of looking sideways at my screen. Honestly, nice job, this puzzle put me through it.
@Robyn I am originally from New Orleans and also don't think food traditions are sacred. I don't think I've ever seen a POBOY dressed with any type of mustard. Mayo and hot sauce, Crystal being the one, are the condos of choice. Maybe creole mustard on a soft-shell crab po' boy, that sounds like a nice pair.
