The intersection of CAN and CANT delights me to no end.
@James Curran Head dancer's what it sounds like. Public powwow festivities generally revolve around music and dancing, with spectators often encouraged to join in. There's usually a pair of experienced dancers—a man and a woman—to lead. If you get lost because you don't know the song and can't find the beat, watch the head dancers.
Nice one. Hits the difficulty sweet spot—I knew little of the trivia offhand, but could puzzle it out with crossfill. Like a steady IV drip of "aha" moments.
There have of late been far too many product placement clues in NYT puzzles, but this is the most egregious offender I've seen. I didn't bother to finish it—this might sound radical but I come here to play word games, not have (more) advertisements jammed into my eyesockets. Knock it off.
@Amy It's one of a group of Internet neologisms from the 00's, collectively called 1337speak (pronounced "leet speak"). I can assure you that no one will think less of you for not knowing about it (quite possibly the opposite 😁)
To answer your question re: 43A, I'm convinced they don't. I've certainly never encountered it. (For a long time I had SWAT, as in the thing you do when the lead vocalist of the Beach Boys won't stop creeping on you.)
I got 11D and 13D on trivia, then was like "Okay, which clue in the lower right quadrant's going to explain why these obviously correct answers don't fit?" Fun puzzle, cute theme. Good job
@CCNY Both methods are viable, in my opinion. I'm largely clue-focused early in the week (essentially speed-running the easy puzzles—I do love my 5-minute Mondays), but from about Wed-Thu onward I find that crossfill becomes much more important (and, critically, more fun) to engage with.
@Andrzej Maybe it's the browsers I use (DuckDuckGo on mobile, Opera on desktop), but all I get in dark mode is a grid of blank squares, all the same color. I'll fiddle with it some more
Apropos of nothing, I really wish the crossy was playable in my browser's dark mode.
