I did not care for this one. It was kind of all my crossword pet peeves rolled into one: - Even once I had all of the circled letters and the rebus, I couldn't visualize the pattern. - Two themed clues where they spanned across the whole board is rough, especially when the crossing clues were in many cases a stretch. - Too many proper nouns - The clues and theme did not feel appropriate for the day of publication, this felt much more like a Thursday. - Only one rebus? And surely there was a different way to represent that portion of the pattern? Not enjoyable for me, was able to eke out a solve but felt like a slog.
Update: Apparently it's usually written as F#. I'm used to seeing it G♭, but both would technically be correct. I should Google before I comment more often!
@MExpat I would call them "themed clues" but I'm not sure if that is the accepted nomenclature!
@Earthling Or at least a way to close the banner!
I don't personally enjoy puzzles where the theme centers on a single piece of media. I don't know anything about Roadrunner and had to solve this one with just the crosses. Not a fun one for me but not every puzzle appeals to everyone and that's okay.
E MINOR would have one flat, not one sharp!
@Eric Ressner Same here, so annoying!
@AySz88 Re: the rebus (ha!), no, I meant that there was a different way to represent an eye than a one-off rebus. Perhaps an O? I just think it's a bit unwieldy to have more than one "gimmick" used for the theme - either do rebuses, or circled clues that make a picture, but not both. Another way to do this would be to circle the rebus and clue the "connect the dots" differently, so that the eye is denoted as being part of the drawing/theme.
@Sam Lyons No wonder I hated this puzzle, then! Art Heist was my most memorable DNF, I found it infuriating.
